Looking for a particular overdrive sound

Who makes a 250 type worth looking at?

Oh, BTW, I also have a SolidGoldFx Beta Custom LM308. It sounds like a darker version of a vintage rat to me. Very cool. So if the 250 gan do that high gain upper mid thing, I am cool with that.

DOD makes one lol. Also the Analogman 250 would be a good place to look. He does a few great mods for this pedal and can even enhance the bass for ya if he knows it's for a bass player.

Ding, ding, ding! We have a winner. :) 18 replies before someone recommends Darkglass. You guys are slow tonight.

As I said earlier, I don't like the B3k sound.

I too had that problem with my heavy right hand pushing out the string clank until I backed off the Lo-Mids and boosted the Hi-mids and Treble on the B7K.

If you know your problem is the 2k range you can tweak the hi mids on the B7K (2.5Khz). I know you didin't like the B3K, but the preamp and the switches on the B7K are truly a work of art. Add to that the blend knob and you are looking at the next standard in the music industry as far as heavier music styles go. Every day Darkglass posts around 2 new artists joining the ranks, and every day I find a new setting that just plain works, it is really worth checking it out, and if you don't like it those things sell so fast on the classifieds I don't think you can go wrong.

Just my opinion of course.

If darkglass isn't what your looking for(even though a lot of people praise these pedals), you might be interested in these distortion pedals.

markbass mini bass distortion pedal: this pedal delivers a grinding distortion sound similar to the fender rumble v3 distortion channel
mxr m80: it is preamp pedal, but it does have a distortion channel. the distortion channel has a heavy grind
ebs metaldrive: this pedal has a tube metallic distortion sound and has a 3 way switch for different distorted bass tones
catilinbread sft: this pedal supposedly duplicates a distorted ampeg sound, but can deliver a warm distorted bass sound
tech 21 vt bass di: yet another preamp pedal, but can deliver a tube-emulated distortion sounds by using the gain and character control

If you want a Rat Tail in a smaller box with a clean blend, not long until this hits the stores:

Is this true? Is it really a Rat Tail in an "MXR costume"? And it's including a clean blend? Sounds really cool, if that's the case.

Also, I did a search in the classifieds forum here, and I noticed that the Rat Tail had a small enclosure version. I guess it's pretty rare, so the MXR Bass Distortion could be an easier purchase...

Check the recent zac brown thread for confirmation that it's the rat sound yer lookin for, I just picked up an ENO rat clone for 50 used w/ warranty at gc that sounds pretty much identical through my own portaflex. On plain non-insane settings there's no real need for a blend knob IMO YMMV.

Also, it's about as big as my thumb + severe allergic reaction.

OP said he doesn't like the clank, the OCD has clank in spades (also why I love it;)).... Though you can back off the tone knob....

He also said he's looking for a medium to high gain overdrive with a coarse grained grit and upper mid presence, which is what an OCD (or OCD clone like the Demon) does very well. Like you mention, you can dial out the clank.

Most OD's have clank if you play a certain way (hard).

I have an OCD and a Darkglass Vintage Microtubes - I think the latter is more what you're after compared to the OCD or even a DG BxK. The DHA VT1-EQ-Bass-Drive tops my list but it's a little more expensive (real tube, DI, etc... in my mind it's worth the extra dough). The DHA can go from "is it on?" to "oh the unholy fuzz!!" but I never find it clanky because it's all tube goodness.

Thanks for all the great replies.

B3K: there is a chasm of a dip around 400 Hz that I just don't like. @johnk_10 has a frequency response graph in his review that shows this. DarkglassB3K I just confirms what I learned from personal experience.

OCD: I have not tried this type of pedal yet. I should definitely give it a try.

Upper mid-presence and clang: I find the BB to be too peaky in a particular upper mid region. (Plus I don't find the EQ to be very helpful) I am hoping for a little smoother eq boost in this range.

EQ: I have a EWS BMC at the end of my dirt loop. It is excellent at providing a mid character that defines my sound.
