you mention playing in person as an important characteristic- this narrows down the options a bit because it can be very hard to find a well set up bass in stores like guitar center- I don't know where you are in ct but I could point you to a Warwick rockbass/ G&L dealer down this end of the state. otherwise previous suggestions are very good lakland 55-01, gl tribute, yamaha, shecter
