Looking for cheap head..

I am leaning away from this, but the reviews I have found on musicians friend and Amazon are generally pretty good for this one. The GK Backline 600 has quite a few negatives on overheating issues...Maybe placed in a rack with top vents covered?

I’ve found that reviews on musicians friend and guitar center are generally glowing unless there is a major flaw. I look to TB for more honest reviews.

The GK does have a top vent so if you do put it in a rack there has to be sufficient space for ventilation. If you want to rack it, you will also need a set of GK rack ears too (just like most other GK heads). I do not have mine racked.

If you are concerned about that, the Hartke 2500/3500 is another very solid time tested head.

I would not be putting it in a rack, so no problem there. Another one I found was the Ampeg B1-RE, saw one locally for $100. Seems like people say they are under-powered, which obviously wouldn't be a concern playing alone, but if I did need to run my whole stack with it, it might be limited.

I had an Ampeg B5r which I think is the same pre. It was ok, not great. Underpowered is a common comment on most of the b series amps that I have seen. The only solid state ampeg that impressed me was a b100r combo I used to have.

The GK has turned out to be the better of the two IMHO.

Keep it clean, guys. No more 5th grade jokes, or there will be points.
That is my fault. I knew when I wrote the title. I thought it was funny at the time, but I now realize that it is, in fact, funny. But not appropriate. I apologize if anyone was offended. It was sophomoric and beneath nearly all of us. I will try to do better in the future.

I thought it was hilarious. There were only like 4 comments anyways no big deal.

Better bow out before the search lights find us:hyper:

Ok, it's a done deal. Money is sent. GK BL 600 it is. I want to sincerely thank every single person who had suggestions on this thread. I have been "out of the game" for a good 15 years and all of your feedback was very much appreciated. I'm thankful to have the great resource that this forum is!
