Looking for Opinions on 1 x 12 Cabs

Needing forum input on 1 x 12 cab selections.

I am looking to purchase a 1 x 12 cab for my GB Shuttle 6.0. I plan to ship and use in New England on vacation, along with my Ibanez acoustic electric. I have a Berg 112, but I don't want to ship it.

I am considering the Eden EX 112 or the Genz Benz Focus LT 112.

The Eden can be had in either 4 or 8 ohm versions. If I go Eden 8 ohm, I could stack it at home with the Berg for a 4 Ohm total load.
On the other hand, the Shuttle delivers 600 watts @ 4 ohms.
Would I be better off just being careful level-wise and having the headroom with a 4 Ohm cab?

Of course, perhaps the Focus would be better for my travel use.

Why buy a cab just for vacation. Why not headphones to practice?

If I had to have a cab on vacation and I was you, I would but a 2nd Berg 112 and ship it home at the end of vacation.

Also, I really see no reason to have a 4ohm 112. An 8ohm gives you so many more options. Does the Shuttle do 2ohms?

I just got an Eden EX112 and like it a lot. I went 4 ohm - I'm using it with a GK MB200 and wanted to get full wattage, plus I have a pair of Genz Focus 115's if I need more speaker. With your Shuttle maybe you should go 8 ohm as you said so you can add another speaker if needed.

The EX112's are on ebay for like 250 shipped.

Hi All, I'm tired of amps playing only to my ankles(!) and I don't want the hassle, weight, and expense of an 8x10 cab. What about two single 12" cabs - one of the floor to get the bass reflection off the floor and one on a stand - angled up so I can hear what I'm playing?

Two Eden EX112, 8 ohm each, and a 500W head SEEMS to be a workable solution. Thoughts? Thanks in advance.

I use a markbass cmd121p 1-12 combo,sitting on top of a markbass traveller 1-12". The combo alone would work in most situations,but the combination of the 2 is fantastic,and big-sounding.
I also can recommend the Avatar 1-12" cab,it's front-ported,so it does have great ooomph at lower volumes.
The markbass new york1-12" is a smaller lighter alternative to the traveller,although it is priced the same.

MysticMichael: My concern is having drivers too low (physically) for me to hear well. Two 12" cabs stacked places the center of the top driver just above my knee. Would you explain the loss of "coupling effect"? And thanks for your input.

I"m well aware of what your concern is, Joe. It's a common problem that simply comes with the territory. :hmm:

My point is that solving this one problem (cabs too low to hear clearly) by putting one of your cabs on a stand, unintentionally creates another problem, which is loss of coupling.

Simply put, when you place your cabs closely together, so that the drivers are positioned no more than one-quarter wavelength apart, it increases the efficiency of your entire system by as much as 3 dB. (It may also minimize any potential phase issues, but I'm not certain.) That's coupling.

Also, when you stack those cabs vertically, directly on top of one another, you create something of a line array effect, which increases horizontal dispersion of the soundwaves, otherwise known as "off-axis response", thus reducing what is known as "beaming" (narrow sound dispersion, centered right in front of the cabs).

When you place your bottom cab directly on the floor, you also get a bit of additional efficiency, especially in the lows, caused by soundwave reflection directly from the floor. In some cases, depending on the material & construction of the floor, you may also obtain some sympathetic vibration from the floor, which may then act as something of a huge resonating panel or resonating chamber - although this can amount to too much of a good thing, and make for a very boomy, uncontrolled low end, if not kept in check.

+1 That was going to be my recommendation. These cabs can hang with 1x12s which cost a lot more. Ultimately, I do prefer my Bergs, but it's amazing how great the GK's sound when you factor in the price difference.

I practice/play with acoustics with a Tc Electronic RS112. I get compliments all the time, every time i play it.

Personally i really like it, its smaller, concentric tweeter so its only about 14" square, but it is long, maybe 2 ft long... its light and its voiced to be very 'classic' sounding, smooth and punchy, overdrives very nicely and can get fairly loud 200W at 8ohms i believe. It sounds wonderful paired with all of my heads (YBA-200, BATT, Walkabout) maybe look into that. Plus it looks great!

+1 for me too. They are light, cheap and the brand is easier to find than some of the others mentioned. If you are doing some small one room jamming one is pretty powerful. I use two because up up against 1 Marshall full stack, 1 Marshal half stack and drums. I use a Shuttle 9.0 with them. Its a little sterile and scooped, but in terms of portability it is an awesome setup.
