Too bad that you did not (yet?) have had a change to compare the PUB to the SR-Technology stuff, especially the SR-Tech Club 300. It has the exact same specifications as the PUB, save for the fact that it is about half the weight of the PUB and 2/3 the price (At least in Europe)! Does anybody have any experience with the SR stuff?
To answer a few questions here. I didn't have a chance to try any AER products but they are not available in my area and I read a few reviews that turned me off them.
I had a chance to exchange e-mail with one of the guys at SR Technology and I just sent him an e-mail to confirm a couple of things but bear this in mind:
From what I could tell, although SR Tech does not distribute right now to North America, they might begin next year. At this time they seem willing to sell direct to customers here at discounted prices.
The documentation on SR Tech's website for the Jam Combo turned out to have incorrect weights listed. It turned out to be almost twice as heavy. I wonder (and have asked) if the weight listed for the Club 300/A is also a mistake. If is not, consider this:
SR Tech told me that the reason the Pub is so heavy is the oversized magnets on the woofer. The speaker is apparently specially designed for the Pub. This feature is apparently what gives the Pub the control and definition that it has. As Monte pointed out, in terms of weight (to size) and performance, the Pub is quite similar to a studio near-field monitor.
Even though this is no longer on the topic of small rigs, you might also be interested to know that according to Lou Roten (who used to run Schertler US and now is an independent Schertler dealer) that the Pub is likely to be withdrawn from the US (and possibly Canadian) markets because the dealers and Schertler can't come to an agreement on the price (Schertler would like to sell it at a higher price). I myself am purchasing a slightly used demo model Pub from a local dealer at a discount. The prediction is that once the inventories are emptied then the product will no longer be available here (at least through local dealers anyway).
