Man, I had a V4... a vintage one. I loved the tone but I found that there's just wasn't enough headroom. And I was playing to 50-200 people. Nothing huge. I ended up with an SVT and am in the same boat you are. I am keeping that bad boy, but I do need something for when it's just overkill. I think I will end up getting an SVT-3PRO and one ampeg cab. Either a 2x10 or 1x15.

This. Especially if you are going to be using a small cab.

I'll +1 the comments about the PF series amps or the 7PRO. The 7PRO can be found in the $500 range used. Just watch the volume as it can get poundingly loud.

My workhorse amp is an SVT 4-Pro. I would not put it in any case, so it is very portable lifting it by the front handles. Its got 3 tubes in the preamp, so you can get some deep sound as well as 1600 watts. $750 used all over the place and is a great bang for the buck.

One step down from that is the SVT 3-Pro ($400-$500 on CL) which takes care of most smaller situations with fantastic sound.

All that newer stuff (SVT-7, PF-500, PF-800) seems to have lots of complaints here. Maybe pushing the engineering too far. Stay with the old school technology and it will last.
