Double Bass Looking to upgrade

How do you know the top is too thick? Only way is to take the top off. Having a proper set up makes a huge difference. People do the post different ways. Not all are equal. There is a lot that can be done before taking the top off. I've done setup work and changed the bass from being hated to loved. Yes it can be tricky to tell if the bass is right for you because of the strings.

Very experienced luthier is what I'm relying on, I trust him. That said, I will be seeking other luthier opinions as well.
