There is so much to learn. Man, sometimes it feels like it is...
Yeah it seems as if I'm in over head.
Waterpiloet- what kind of music are you aiming to play?
that's a good thing! this is how you learn. trial by fire. If they are willing to play with you and help you out then this can be a valuable learning experience for you even if you don't stick with them.
My personal taste is all over the place really, but they lean toward a rock/ alternative type of genre.
so is/are the situation/s you are get into open jams over chords, in a single key, or a guitarist with loose arrangements of riffs?
one thing that seems to be a shortcoming of beginners (regarding jamming with others) is thinking that they should be as busy as the guitarist... this makes the music sound schizophrenic. you will get more gigs early if you play a bassist's role by playing a pattern that locks in with the drummer to support the guitarist. you can add small nuisances as you see fit, but always try to keep it locked.
anyone can learn a cover, .

Ive been playing about a year and pretty much everyone Ive ever talked to or read here on TB says to join a band. So thats what Ive started to do.
Last night was my audition. Originally when I contacted them I asked for some songs that Id be required to know for the audition to see if it was something I could even do. Long story short. There werent any. It was a jam. There are just two of them, drummer and guitarist. The idea is to show up and see what happens...
Since I am learning I really like to be as prepared as possible, and had no idea how to prepare, but went anyway, insuring they knew how new I was (which they were fine with), as I didnt have anything to lose...
This was the first time Ive ever played with anyone before and had a lot of fun. But for the most part was completely lost, but I can see how fast I will improve trying to play this way.
So heres where Im going with this... They invited me back next Monday to do it again. The problem (one of many) is that Im not exactly sure what I should be concentrating on.
Should I be trying to follow the guitar?
Should I just make up a bass line and have the guitar do so something over top of me?
Everything is happening so fast that by the time I see where the guitarists hand is, process it, then try and get there hes already somewhere else...
Any recommendations on preparing for something like this?
