Low-cost DIY practice/coffeehouse tweeterless 110 [long]

I bought one (a DIY10) from a friend that was built like the post said to even with the 2010. I then asked Duke about the 2510 and he said it would work.

I took the original apart and measured the cabinet, then built one my self, the frame on the front for the grille was a after thought. As long as you keep the volume of space in the cabinet the same you will be ok.

Actually, I have 2 more boxes built. But probably will not finish them. I am cutting back and only doing my Church playing. My knees need replacing and for me and you - I was born up there before it became a state - so getting to old for this stuff these days.

Do you mind sharing the cab dimensions with me, and the port size? As you know even buying a cheap cab from Speaker Express will cost as much in shipping!

I'm going to be lazy about the measurements and make you do the math.

I'm seeing the cab walls as being 11/16" thick. All measurements are external

12" W x 14.25" D x 16" H.

The port is 1.875" (1 7/8") tall and 10.375" (10 3/8") deep. Both of those are internal dimensions.

Oh, screw it! By my math, the cab is 10.625" (10 5/8") W x 12.875" (12 7/8") D x 14.625" (14 5/8") H. Gross internal volume is 2000.654296875 in^3. Taking the port out (volume with its wall is 26.5859375 in^3) and you get a net volume of 1974.068359375 in^3 or 1.1424006709346064814814814814815 ft^3. Eminence has gotten very good about listing the volume of the drivers at rest but don't seem to have that spec for the S2010. The Deltalite 2510 II consumes .026 ft^3 of cab. There are no other serious deductions, so your cab volume comes out to be 1.1164006709346064814814814814815 ft^3.

Dropping a 2510 into the cab unmodified gives a nice 64 Hz F3. Displacement limit around 100 watts, giving around 114 dB. The S2010 gives very similar results. I guess it's a question of whether you like the basic tone of the speaker. I suppose since I already have the notch filter components that Duke laid out early in this thread I'll go there first. I'm not sure I want to shell out $125 a pop for the 2510's.

Yeahhh, that kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it! I mean of a cheap cab....
 
Yes the original post was for a low cost project, and I got one. But by itself the 2010 did not do the job - but the 2510 was a great improvement.

So if the cost concern the 2010 is the deal. But for a 10 to do the job the 2510 should be considered.

Since I built my cabinet out of good cabinet pine and I built 2 of them with 2510's cost was not the issue, size and weight were of more concern. The 2 with 2510's and a Lil Mark 500 watt head would do any club gig I have done in my area, and one will do my Church gigs.

Maybe we should talk about the 2010 in this post about a cheap good little rig and maybe the 2510's in the "mini rigs of doom" thread.

You want it done "quick" "cheap "right" You can pick any two you want and the result will be the last.

box, speaker and input jack.

This price does not include speaker grille, and handle.

When I built mine I paid for box speaker and input jack:

Box got 3 made out of a 75 dollar sheet of cabinet plywood so $ 25
Speaker 2510 $125
Input dish and jack $ 10
I used Duratek finish (not a full bag) $ 18

total $ 178

So that is 178 - 165 = $13 more and I had to built and finish my cabinet

Now I added feet and a frame with a grille on front so it was more - but for the basic design I spent 13 more dollars and a bit more time for a better cabinet I fell. With all else added
I spent a total of 191.44 plus tax for my cabinet.

So for 383 dollars I have 2 and they sound great still a lot cheaper than many other single cabinets out there.

Just for your reading guys - I am getting ready to build another - will have pics up as I go.

Excellent, Lenny. Thanks for sharing. I've wanted a high quality 10" box for my little MB200!
 
A few players here have been insistent that the performance of the S2010 cab is somehow inadequate, poor insufficient, etc, then go on to say that results with the 2510 are much better. I have the S2010 version, and , while I do not have the 2510, I do have a (similar) 2512II. I find the S2010 and 2512I to have a very similar tone, differing principally in the deep bass, where the 2512II has a distinct edge. Mids and highs are very similar. I find that the rising high end in both drivers helps cut through a mix. I know that the 2510 has a thermal power handling advantage (amounts to 2.2 db, without considering thermal compression), but the same could be said for the 2510 vs the 3010. I find the S2010 cab to be a remarkably good performer, with great tone and the ability to handle small gigs very well. However, the performance upgrade path is seemingly unending. There are many far more capable 110 cabs than the S2010 cab AND the 2510 version. I'm just curious about what these players are hearing as advantages of the 2510 over the S2010.

I like the tone of my S2010. It has been a good workhorse for band practice and jams for three years.

Within it's power limits, it sounds good. I think that those that have a problem with it may be pushing it too hard. The S2510 has better power handling. If someone really wants to push it, maybe they should go to a 12" like the DL 2512II.

Hey Brother,

I will measure the one I just built and send you the exact dim later tonight. I am getting ready to build one just as the post says and compare the orig with the 2510 upgrade.

My box is the same as the one you buy - so look for the dims tonight.

Here is the dims. I took the bought cabinet and removed the cheap carpet and then measured for my dimensions for my built box.
