Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

Hey Ralf -do you think it'd be possible to rig it up so that the L-pad was '0db' at one point, and '3db' at another point, or thereabouts, so we can kind of know where 'flat' is?

Doesn't matter where that is I guess, but it'd be nice to know where the mid and woofer are equal sensitivity-wise (roughly).

I really don't want to have to use the ear-test every time I set my cab up a different way :)

That can be done.

I'm trusting Alex, Pw and Greenboy's expertise and descriptions in this instance, and my own experience with the midrange of the 3015LF - I don't like how it sounds terribly well. From my discussions with Ralf I believe his angle is definitely viable because he is taking all of that into account, but I'm going to try out the fEarful designers' style of crossover first. Lining up the charts of response, it seems like this is a very good crossover range for the drivers.

I'm not too proud to go back and buy the crossover Ralf designed if I don't like it this way, though :)

If the timing works out, and all the stars align, we will try to get some ears on your cab compared to the one that we played this morning.

Just got off the phone with Don. He's meeting with Ralf tomorrow. I'd be interested in waiting on my cab even though it's finished because it looks like Ralf will have the ability to test the same cab with different xovers real soon, but I trust Ralf's original xover design is more than adequate.

Rs, yours is a 3way correct?

That would be awesome. I have no idea what the time frame is on Ralf doing the xover, since I'm being a pain and getting something custom, but I hope you get a chance to check it out.

I know Don really likes building different stuff, but it sounds like his 15/6 could turn into a huge seller so it's great to see all this attention and R&D going into it :)

Yeah, I definitely believe it will range from beyond adequate to awesome. The thing to keep in mind is this is a really relatively minor difference. I would be shocked if the listeners will be able to tell much difference, but who knows :)

I think PW's crossover will show some small dispersion benefits, and probably sound a little different around 800-1200hz or so. But again, pretty minor overall.

My guess is a lot of people will prefer the sound of the 800-1200hz band on the 3015LF to the 18 sound -- I would anticipate my cab sounding a little more sterile at those frequencies.

On the flipside, my (the fEarful style) cab is a lot taller than Don's, which I think he will find makes a huge difference at how loud it sounds up close, particularly with the crossover being lower.

Overall, red delicious to gala apples is my thinking ;)

No, to be honest you could low-pass my cab at 2500hz and I doubt you could tell the difference in the way I play and how much treble I use.

My Iamp is currently -10db @ 4khz and -6-10 @ 1.2khz (half octave Q).

Looks familiar:

IMO - it's the perfect cabinet for (overdriven) low power tube amps (among other things).

I have great respect for both Ralf and Don, and I'm sure whatever they are doing will sound great.

I can TOTALLY hear that, after spending time with a similar cab today! That looks amazing!

It sees the most time with an Ampeg V-4B, a 100 watt Marshall clone I built and the Fender Twin Reverb clone I built (pictured). It can do a lot with 100 watts and sounds great in "fuzz land" with the Ampeg and Marshall. I prefer the Acmes (B2s) and with the Thunderfunk and my pre/power amp setups.

I can see you cringing through the interwebz! ;)
