Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

Out of curiosity, are you hearing more finger-sliding-across-strings noise? At my gig last night, it seemed a bit excessive, so I had to CUT frequencies around 1kHz. That seemed to help.

With good technique, you should not have any problem with string noise. I have a sizzly wizzly tone, and have zero issue (although I do like to cut around 800 hz just to take a bit of the gank out of the tone, but it has nothing to do with string noise).

I gig with tweeters a blarin' and brand new stainless steel roundwounds on aggressive 70's style J basses with my passive tone control wide open.

IMO, don't try to fix 'string noise' with EQ. Go to the woodshed, and you will be happy you did down the road. Per Chef's post, if you want to 'cheat' a little bit, use nickel rounds or flats versus stainless steel rounds. If you already are using nickels or flats.... get ye to the woodshed!

IMO!

Okay, I guess I suck then, but the BX1200 sure does sound pretty bright and shrill in those high mids. Again, with my Pro Bass 500, it didn't pose any problem whatsoever. But, alas, it did make me pay more attention about not dragging my fingers across the strings unnecessarily, but during certain slides it couldn't really be helped, and the string noise was louder than the actual notes.

Give yourself a little time with the BX1200.
It has the same eq options as my BX500 which I found to be bright as well.

After a little time with my amp I've found the eq to be quite robust. I can go from dub to shrill no problem.

Yeah we all probably need to woodshed a bit, but I wouldn't concern yourself too much about it.

I thought I'd post with an update. The LDS is still performing well. Great cab.

As for the shrill sound at 1kHz, I'm practicing at home with no cut at that frequency, and it seems to be getting a little better. I guess it's not a bad thing to be forced to clean up my fretting hand technique a little bit. The BX1200 is still a bright amp, though. :hiding:

Since I'm not playin it or anything while I'm waiting on the correct 3015, I thought I'd share some of my crappy photography. Here's the LDS rendition of GB's fEarful 15/6/1

Here's Ralph's rendition of PW's x-over.

Nice pics BH. I was very pleasantly surprised to see Don used basically the same bracing as the fearfuls :) Very similar anyway.

Would you snap a couple pics of the mid chamber? :) I think don did something different with that too.

Did you use both with the new cab then?

Which crossover do you have? The one picture I looked at today that was supposedly a greenboy/Passinwind one didn't look like it was in just casual perusal, and that noisy 1K Hz talk I keep hearing sure points to crossover design here...

Ralf did a similar pass to Passinwind's with less over-the-top components so I'd expect it to look different. That's one area I know nothing at all about though.

I don't find the 1khz to be noisy so much as present. I'm running the mid at even with the woofer, so the mids are pretty darned loud, and the IAmp seems to be very very flat.

It's sounding a lot less abrasive as I clean up my technique ;) I think long-time scooping at 800-1khz has made me pretty sloppy.

That said if you have any ideas for measuring the response of the cabinet I'd be happy to take some measurements if I've got the equipment. I could do some pure flat recordings on axis with the Zoom, or a mic into the Zoom.

Using a round midchamber doesn't significantly knock down standing waves any more than just having an asymmetric interior for the woofer does. Nor does it perform that function better than the rectangular approach for the mid driver which also has the midrange cone NOT centered within it which I'd also attempt with a round chamber... But the bigger factors are properly stuffing the mid chamber, and lining the woofer's interior space.

One reason I designed the fEarful the way I did is to put a brace across the baffle.

Yes.

I should have the original crossover that Ralf designed for this cab. Like I said, that upper mid response is very different when playing through the two heads I have. The Peavey is noticeably less pronounced in that frequency range IMO.

Well, my 3015LF showed up today. The cab sounds great in the living room with my spare gear. I ran an SVPCL and a QSC 1802 on it and it sounded great. I hate that preamp with my 410 cab so I can’t wait to get to the gig and see what it sounds like with the F1X, DBX 160, and the crown.

That mid driver is serious! Very balanced tone all the way down to rattling stuff off shelves. Mine’s got a tweet in it crossed at 4.5 and it works well for “sizzle”( or whatever we’re calling it this week) on the slap stuff and I imagine it will come in handy on my EUB. Other than that, it will probably be turned off though. I’ll have a gig report after tonight.

Well, I bought Chef's LDS 15/6. I have the biggest gig of my life coming up Sept 12. Its at one of the biggest outdoor "show and shine" car shows in N. America. I played one of these car shows last year, albeit a different smaller one. They told me there would be about 50,000 attending. I thought to myself that number sounds a little ridiculolous. Well, I dont know how many people were there, but it was it a huge amount. This year the local Harley Davidson dealership loves us and has hired us to play on their stage for four hours. Apparently something like 100,000 people will be attending this event so its an incredible opportunity for my band, Dick Cash, to be heard.

Anyway, for such an important gig I am not sure if I should bring this new to me cab, or stick with ul112 stack that I know better. I am sure the 15/6 can handle the job, I am just a little leary of bringing a cab I am not famaliar with to such a gig.

Hopefully, it will arrive in time to get it on a couple gigs before the big one.

Since this is an outdoor gig with lots of people, if I do use the 15/6, maybe I should bring one of my ul112s. Not sure what kind of PA support we will have. Usually when we play the harley shows we dont want to be overly loud and just use the PA for vocals.

100,000 people, and vocals-only PA? Not a chance. You should have sidefills and a dedicated monitor board and monitor engineer on a gig like that.
