Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

This 15/6 from Don @ LDS arrived last month. Thoroughly pleasing, huge tone. Exceptional manufacturing quality. The sub driver is a Emminence Kappalite 3015LF; the mid is a 6.5" 18Sound 6ND410. Crossover is @ 800hz. No tweeter. Tolex cover. Couldn't be happier with this cab! A big motivation was to get the tone of a 15 in a lightweight and compact package; this weighs under 45 pounds (would be lighter, but I wanted the metal grill). The ShuttleMAX12 peaks at 375 watts @ 8 ohms, so I added the QSC PLX3602 and WOW - the cab REALLY opens up with the extra power, providing a deeper, richer, more commanding full tone. Using the ShuttleMAX12 as a preamp, the QSC powers the 15/6 with 725 watts off one side. More than enough volume for any internal venue. I'm adding another 15/6 for outside venues w/o PA support. Note how the 23.5"W x 22"T x 18"D dimensions perfectly fit the rack. Would work fine for a tube amp.

Yessir. They do like lotsa power.
I'm curious about your mic placement though, and how that worked.
I woulda split the diff b/t the 15 and the mid driver, and backed the mic off a bit so "it heard both of them a little better."
YMMV, may not have been what you wanted, etc...

I'm just starting to experiment with micing the cab. That's a Sennheiser 421 dynamic mic in the photo. I've gotten excellent results using an Audio Technica AT825 stereo mic and want to give that a try to capture the sound of both drivers. I heard more harmonic articulation when I used an AKG Perception 400 condenser on the 3015LF. In that case, I was playing a Tacoma Thunderchief fretless acoustic bass guitar. Sounded like an upright!

I've tried to read through this thread, but after 10 pages my eyes started to bleed, so, forgive me if this has already been done or asked about. has anyone posted any sound clips or videos of these cabs, and has anyone had Don build the Greenboy version with horn ?

How does it compare to the Bergantino HT115? (I know you used to have a couple of those.) I was thinking of this LDS cab but then an HT115 came up on ebay and I had to grab it.

I reluctantly sold my HT115s because I loved their tone. Unfortunately, they were too heavy for me to move around. However, I have no regrets. I like the tone of the 15/6 much better than the Bergs. The 15/6 is smoother, more robust, has a deeper, richer tone, and is capable of much louder volume. It's also about 17 pounds lighter. I usually had the Berg's horns turned off or down low, so I did not anticipate needing a tweeter on the 15/6. Very happy with the result. If you like the HT115, you'll probably be more pleased with the 15/6.

Dang, dude. You just gave me buyer's remorse on a cab I've wanted for years, and which hasn't even arrived in the mail yet!

I've used an HT115 for years...and now it sits covered in our practice room. Its a really great cab and you'll be VERY happy with it.

But my 15/6 (fEarful design) destroys it in every way. Night and day.

Many of these threads are getting pretty hard to search through, for sure.

KJung and rpsands both have posted LDS cab clips -- ping 'em for the links. I've posted a few fEarful 12/6 clips, and links to my own f'lavors of 15/6/1 cabs. But I doubt that my playing and tonal preferences are gonna be all that relevant to most of you guys...;)

Clips are a good indication of just one thing, really: how something sounded the way it was recorded with the recording chain, instrument, room, EQ, etc that was used at that time. Why people would attempt to use them for anything beyond listening to that moment in time is beyond me.

Certainly I would never try to figure out what an enclosure "sounds like", based on a clip. I mean, I can make a fEarful (or a lot of other cabs) sound a lot of different ways without half trying, just by changing the room, the placement of enclosure or mic, the type of mic, the bass, and my playing. That doesn't mean that it actually sounded to me like the cab did in that room at that moment. It's ludicrous to think clips have much value beyond entertainment, in my estimation ; }

I actually have trouble with ascertaining the mic-position midrange characteristics as well. Of course that may because I'm not playing back the clips on ultra accurate monitors calibrated to an acoustically treated environment... That and a few other variables might be standing in the way, eh? ; }

Thanks for that info. I didn't realize someone was making these. Cool.

How much less would it weigh with cloth rather than the steel grill?

What'd it cost please?

Thanks.

Kudos to Greenboy for the plans and allowing them fo free. Do you accept donations? I'd think given the rave reviews people would wanna give you some xmax..Xmas cheer.

I love the idea of an easily-carried 1x15. Been thinking of a Mesa Scout cab but now this has my attention with the 6" driver and all.

Probably important to note that while there are definite similarities to the fEarful 15/6, this cab is a different design...
