Low Down Sound 15/6.5 Cab

Smash, the plans are on the fearful wiki; Don at LowDownSound has them, and will build to that spec if that's what you want.
I believe the wiki has other builders listed as well.

Oh, OK, thanks. This is a huge thread ... is there someplace that the differences are noted please?

Off the top of my head, from looking at Ukiah Bass' cab and a few of the others in this thread, the things that outwardly stand out:

-Size/shape is different. This box looks to be much smaller than the fEarful 15/6 which is taller (putting the mid closer to the ear). Casually, they don't look to have the same interior volume.

-The porting is different. The fearful has a 'slot' port that's fairly different from the LDS design being discussed with tube ports.

-The wood stock appears to be 3/4" instead of the fEarful's 1/2".

-Its hard to tell what's going on inside, without taking a look, but the bracing in the Greenboy design is fairly specific as are the interior geometries, including the driver placement within the box and the mid-driver placement in its chamber...hard to say that the LDS follows that.

-Crossover design? Hrrrrmmmm. I know that people have requested Charlie's design in some cabs, but there's been discussion about whether it indeed is or not. I haven't heard that anyone's requested the newest GB crossover design...I built it, and yes it's a noticeable improvement.

By comparison, here's my 15/6:

I know that LDS will do a Greenboy design on request though...

Thanks guys. BurningSkies, that looks great. I read your build thread. You and your builder did a great job !

I'm all for more height and internal volume. What's yours weigh?

"I haven't heard that anyone's requested the newest GB crossover design...I built it, and yes it's a noticeable improvement."

Noticeable improvement over what?

Like you, I have a Schroeder 1212R and play some reggae, so if you can compare/contrast to that cab I'd have a good idea.

What amp are you running into yours - I think you had an LMII, is that enough? I'd ideally have one of these in 4 Ohm, if that exists, and run it with my Walkabout, though I'm more curious than a potential buyer at this point.

Can anyone say or reasonably guess how it'd compare to a Mesa Boogie Scout 15" cab?

Thanks.

O/T - I finally saw "Rockers" recently. What a hoot ! Seen? If not, check it out.

Thanks! I need to go through and add a bunch of details to the Wiki and do a whole bunch of updating, I’ve just been very busy right now (luckily, playing my cab). I haven’t done an official weighing of my cab, but I would guess that its in the 50-ish range. It’s noticeably lighter than the 1212r I have as well as the HT115.

As for the crossover, I initially used a stock Eminence PXB2:800 along with a 3.5db pad on the mid. It sounded pretty good, but keep in mind that I roll off a lot of content on the highs for most of my playing, but for a rock/near-flat-ish kind of thing, I thought it was fairly smooth and even. The GB design crosses over lower, meaning more content is handled by the 6”, and off axis it was much better and representative. It also is smoother up top because it kills the weird peak that the 3015LF has around 1K. It makes the 6” work a bit harder, but not in a bad way.

In sound comparison to the 1212R it’s an orange to the Schroeder’s apple. Night and day. I used the Schroeder on top of a Berg HT115 to get more lows to ‘fill’ my sound out. The 15/6 has content well below either of these cabs. It doesn’t have the low mid sledge hammer of the 1212, but it’s a lot wider ranging on both ends. Its smoother sounding and can be a lot crisper on top if you want. To my ear the 15/6 has richer harmonic content, sounds fuller and has more shaping capability. I’ve been using the single 15/6 instead of 2 cabs, although I’d like to add a second 15-sub in the future (I play LOUD and low). I’d also like a 1Kw micro to take the place of the LMII. It’s working fine for now but I feel like it’s running out of headroom on the lows (I’m boosted on the LMII low to about 1 o’clock., and run the power amp at noon). I’ve had to turn the lows down since getting the fEarful. It runs lower than the other cabs and it was a bit of an adjustment to have that much ‘below the belt’ content reproduced.

Of course it may be a bit of a wrinkle for you because the 3015LF is only available as an 8ohm speaker, so that might be a deal breaker for you. There’s not another substitutable 4ohm driver.

[***Rockers is a trip. I have a copy of it (actually, two…one from the age of VHS and a DVD)…and while the movie will never be mistaken for a masterpiece, it’s a must-see for any reggae fan. Every scene is packed with Jamaican music legends. Of course, my favorite in the film is Jacob Miller, but it really gives a great sense of what it was to be of that scene at that time.

I've had the same experience, and add that my 15/6 is *highly* sensitive to EQ. I like it nearly flat, but you can add or subtract as desired and the cab responds exactly to specification of EQ. It's a chameleon. You can make it sound like anything you want with a good preamp.

+1 on my LDS 15/6. That's why I added the QSC amp to eliminate any additional lust for power. The power capability of these micros seems to be designed around [heavy] 4 ohm cabs, or two 8 ohm cabs to create a 4 ohm load for max power. When you chose the fEarful/LDS/.* 15/6 route, the 8 ohm cab forces a re-examination of your power requirements. The Shuttle 9 is a step in the right direction. Hopefully, Genz and the other micro manufacturers will beef up 8 ohm power capability in other future offerings. Otherwise, a separate power amp will be essential to let the 15/6 express its full potential.

FYI the LDS version of the 15/6 has a smaller front profile but is deeper and I believe a bit wider, so it's roughly the same internal space (or very close).

To be exact: LDS 15/6 is 23.5" wide, 22.0" tall, and 18.0" deep.

I'm unsure how it compares sonically to the fEarful 15/6 without tweeter. I prefered the more compact form factor of the LDS version, it conveniently fits a standard SKB rack or tube amp, and a stack of two LDS cabs isn't quite as towering as two fEarfuls combined with a rack on top.

You don't like TOWERS? Who doesn't like TOWERS? Are you are only 4 feet tall? ; } ...You can cut the cubes up any way you want them, but my ears like things that are tall alone - and taller when two are used. After 5 feet of enclosure height the advantages diminish of course. Trading depth for better signal-to-ear also is a great way to arrange the cubes when one is transporting cabs in subcompacts that are also carrying other gear too. A lot of them don't have enough trunk clearance ferinstance, to deal with more than 16".

I have a fEarful 15/6tube design now that is identical in internal volume and tuning to the original 15/6 but can be set on one side for 26"-wide tube heads, or on another for 24"-wide tube heads. It still is only 16" deep and can have one vent blocked off to get a response curve like a good sealed cab.

Absolutely. I spoke with Don earlier today about building a 1515/66 for me. He'll be starting it in a few weeks, and he mentioned that Ken will be the first to take it for a test drive. :)

UPDATE: Just wrote to Don and changed my order to a fEarful 15/6. Yeah, I'd love to have a monster 2x15, but I think I'll start out with the one cab and see how it works out with my band. If I need more in the future, maybe I'll add another. I also asked Don to adhere to greenboy's plans. We'll work out the details of the Patterson-built crossover as we move forward, but I want a fEarful 15/6, not an "interpretation".

Stop reading my mind. But still, my V4 and I thank you...Can't wait to see it!

+1...good move! I've been following greenboy's ideas for over two years, after realizing his ultimate cab goals basically match mine. So much thought has been put into all aspects of the design, from the midrange height (making it easier to hear from the player's perspective) to the "reasonable cost without compromise" factor. These details, from the largest to smallest, allows me to say, my next cab will definitely be a fEarful design.

BTW, make sure you pay attention to the critical crossover to ensure you have the best performance from these cabs. It almost seems like an afterthought in many other designs.

Hey SMASH

How's it goin' bro? I recently bought and re-sold this very cab (the actual cab pictured on the first page). I sold it mainly because it would not fit in my car properly. However, I am lusting after some other fEarful style cab... perhaps a pair of 112s.

The LDS 15/6 sounds truly beautiful. Huge blooming lows that just engulf the band. I ran it with my LMII and while I think you could get away with the pairing for most pub gigs around here, it would be pushing it for sure. That said, your b1500 would do very well with it.

I sold it to a TBer / Vancouverite. I'll see if I can remember his name and perhaps you could check out his band and hear the cab for yourself. It certainly is a Light Loud and Low cab... and sounds very nice.
