Low Down Sound Club, Part Four

I haven't ordered it yet and anticipate a long wait once I do lol. I actually have gotten used to the sound of the V4B through the, Bergantino 12s and now am thinking more about what it will sound like with the faital. I mostly use my 400rb or Genz Benz home with the 12s. I imagine the wait will be 3 to 5 weeks which is no problem since I seemed to have found the V4B for a steal recently.

I wanted a single cab solution for the Ampeg and Don told me the mids are smoother and no mod driver or tweet is needed with the Faital as I saw here on TB.

I have not thought about a tweeter or 15/6 design, but mainly wanted a 4 ohm 15 so I could use my Genz Benz Streamliner and 400RB with the 15. His advice and build quality seems to be top notch and I know that the Faital will be great as a standalone. It amazes me that these cabs can be built with the great prices. I own 2 Bergantino HD112's that I absolutely love and hope the LDS will sound great with the V$B which mainly stays home. My build will most likely be in black tolex and the steel or mesh grill, or what Don calls "standard clothes." Thanks to TB for the wealth of info on these 15" drivers. I am hoping to pick up a Tecamp Puma 500 in the near future which would sound killer through the Faital.

I have the Greenboy version of this cab, the Bassic 15 with the 4 ohm Faital. Closest sounding stand alone 15 to the old JBL K140 15. I'm using mine in a small Blues band with a GB Shuttle 6.2. Plenty loud for my needs. The only other 4 ohm custom built 15 cab that I know of, that uses this driver, is Duke's new Hathor 1533.

Top cab: 15/6/1

Bottom cab: 15 Sub (3015LF Loaded)

Cloth Tweed Covering with Wheat/Oxblood Grillcloth. Using a ShuttleMax 12.2 to power them (750W total), but on the lookout to trade for a ShuttleMax 9.2 for a little extra power.

LDS/Don: great stuff.
I have a bunch of his work.
My lone caveat with him is: be careful spec'ing weird stuff. Because if that's what you really want, he'll do it. And you may not like "your weird design."

I used my 12/6/1+ 12 sub this last weekend. It killed, like it always has.
I've been using my 15/6/1 pretty exclusively since I got it.

My two 2x8's, and 4x8 have been relegated to various rehearsal spaces. Still great cabs, but, heavy compared the the fF based builds.

Only got to play through it for a few minutes inside (and I'm not sure if it's broken in it) so I can't give an opinion on the sound, but I must commend Don on the finish; this thing is immaculate...not too mention he packed that thing so well...was quite nervous about it travelling 4 time zones and a few weeks to get here but it arrived in perfect shape. Can't wait to try it out on some gigs but I'm rediculously excited...and yea Chef, it's quite tall but I like it that way :-)

Question: Does Don break in the cabs or should I do the honors?

I just received mine last week, and Don said I should work it in gently. So I think it's up to us to break them in.
I pumped a 31Hz signal into mine for a few hours at home using my Shuttle 9.2, and then I took it to the gig.

I couldn't believe how accurate this cabinet sounded. Here's what I mean by that:

I use UE11 Ultimate Ears IEM's when the band uses our own PA. During shows where we have pro sound, I usually use the provided monitors. This past show, I wore my IEM's.

I have a little mixer that sends to my ears the main band mix, my vocal, and my bass signal from the line out on my amp.

I listened to my bass sound through the cabinet first during sound check, and the tone was just fantastic (first gig using both the Shuttle 9.2 and the LDS cab). The lows were tight, focused, and powerful. The mids and highs were present and aggressive, but not harsh or overpowering. It just sounded right, if that makes sense.

Then I put my UE11's in and adjusted the levels. My bass tone sounded exactly the same through my IEM's. I couldn't believe it.

Don really knows what he's doing. My cabinet sounds amazing, and is wonderful to look at. And just about every other one of his cabinets that I have seen looks just as striking.

Nice! Looking forward to similar results from mine as well...I've always wondered though: Do you guys just set a constant tone through the speakers and then go off to work or something? Come back at 5 and that's that?

I plugged an old Android phone into my amp. It had a frequency generator app on it. Turned it on and just kinda put up with rattling windows for a few hours.

Funny, that kind of constant low rumble can make you feel uneasy after a while.
When my fiancee got home, she was like "oh my God... What is that?!?" I started to explain and she stopped me mid-sentence and said, "Can you make it stop? It's hurting my teeth!"
