I was just thinking about LDS compared to "that other custom cab builder". I heard of both companies a few years ago via TB. In 2007, I contacted both when I was looking for a 3-way, 15" based cab. Ultimately I went with "Dr You Know Who" for no particular reason other than the fact that he was producing a new cab (DRB 1580) that seemed to line up with my needs. Turned out not to satisfy me as expected, so now I'm jonesin' for a fEarful 15/6.

Just hoping Don doesn't get swamped with orders that would affect timely delivery.

He's very 'on top' of this issue, and again is pretty good at 'delivering when promised' (within reason, given his supply chain). It's very difficult for a custom shop, since he can't order 100 speakers at a time (or even 10 speakers at a time). It's more expensive for him also (no economies of scale). However, so far so good in that every cab I've seen come out of the shop in the past 6 months or so that I've served as his 'informal cab tester prior to shipping' has been top notch, and as far as I know, has been delivered approximately when promised.

Don and I discuss this issue quite a bit, and my view is the absolute delivery time is less important than an honest estimate up front. That way, if the potential customer needs something more quickly, he/she can make that choice prior to ordering.

KJ, One other question re the little 1x12 cab a few posts back. What do you remember about the rear port?
Was it placed directly over the magnet, or off to the corner?
Was it just a cut out hole, or a tube port?

I have a small, sealed 1x15 that has comparatively, the same form (just large enough to fit a a 15 on the baffle). I'm going to port it to use as a lightweight cab for small gigs, and trying to get some feedback on this type cab.....thx

I can't remember... I'm pretty sure it was a very small, shallow tube port. Porting, obviously, is pretty complex and you need the driver spec's and exact box size to really do it right. That's over my head. PM Vision and he can at least tell you what it looks like. I believe it was centered since that cab is so small. It sounded GREAT.

Don is great and puts out great products. He has built 3 bass cabs for me and currently is building a pa for my band. A pair of 3-way tops and four 1x15 subs. The tops are filled with kappalite 3015's, 18sound nd410's and selenium horn drivers with eminence stti lenses. He's currently waiting on crossovers for the tops. It's taken awhile because of the holidays, parts, a buisy schedule, etc. but, I totally understand. Don's work is worth the wait and I can't wait to get the new pa. Kjung, if you have seen my new tops, let me know. Thanks.

Don has talked about that project, and really digs it. Funny thing, I've never been to Don's current shop! He just brings over stuff between finishing and shipping for a 'test' and also for me to post pic's for TBers and, on occasion, a sound clip. However, when that all gets done, I will pop over to the shop and snap some pics. That should be a killer PA!

I ended up having very few situations where a single,small 112 would work for me, so my buddy Jason (TBer Vision) purchased it from me and uses it regularly. I had this spec'd out to kind of vibe the tone of the UL410. It has a very high quality B&C Coax driver (the tweeter is beautiful), and I challenged Don to make the smallest, lightest 112 he could that still provided a nice deep tone, and the present upper mids and airy treble of the 410UL. He really hit a home run with this one. Given the coax tweeter and rear port, it is very small (basically an under 30 pound 14" cube or so). Don was, at that time, using a blue baffle finish, but has moved away from that recently.

Here's a pic of the 15/6 I got last week. Grill cloth is Fender Style Aged... although you probably can't tell much from the pic. This replaces a Dr Bass 212 that has the Delta12LF's in it. The LDS is lighter, and I think stands high enough that I can leave it on the floor and still hear that mid driver. Have not really gotten it loud yet which will be the true test. Vol wise it's may be a little louder than the 212 even though it's only a 8 ohm cab.

Don might have to hire help if these super sezzy cabs get any more popular. One of the real challenges of business is to delegate work and still have your own high standards produced- I wish Don well, and might have to get in line for a fEarful or such.

All my boxes with 8's have the "long throw" version.
They're heavy drivers.
I think the 2x8's are about 45 per.
Not sure on the 4x8 box, but it's substantively heavier feeling than the Epi UL410 I have...but, it's an earlier version. So, I'd bet the 4x8 is in the 70lb range...
It's a Bad Mutha though, and generally plenty for any job I'd take the UL410 to.
The 4x8+2x8 stack is a little taller than my Henry 8x8.

I really like those 8" loaded cabs for double bass, if that's important to you.

Well, I'm going to become a member of the 'LDS club' again. After hearing that wonderful clip I posted of TBer Vision playing a J Bass through the 112 B&C Coax that Don built for me a while back (and that I ended up not really having a use for at the time), I am going to spec out a similar cab in 115 version (haven't even talked to Don about it yet, but we had discussed it in the past when I said that I loved the tone of that 112 coax, but needed a bit more oomph in a single cab solution).

The 15/6's are wonderful, but just not quite my thing.

Here's what I'm thinking...

- High quality 115 Neo Coax with good spec's. Beyma makes one (15XA38Nd), and I believe it looks good on paper and is appropriate for a relatively small box... I'm sure it costs an arm and a leg also:D

- Ralf Patterson crossover... he did the one on the 112 Coax, and it was beautiful sounding... no clue as to crossover point (Edit 1.8K, and it is a nice soft dome type tweeter, so should be very 'natural extension of the woofer' sounding).

- Edit: Bottom shelf port and I will spec the cab a bit thinner front to back and a little taller versus the 112 cube I had... nice for schlepping on a small cart... we shall see)

- Spray on finish (probably the heavy duty truck liner stuff... that rough finish is nice for keeping a micro head in place when the cab is tilted), with metal grill and 'locking corners' for durability

- Heavy duty flush mounted side handles

- Attenuator mounted on the rear of the cab with the speakons

- Tilt back handle on bottom of cab (great option with these small cabs).


It will be 8ohm, which is fine for a small cab that should have relatively high SPL.

I think that will be a great small gig stand-alone cab, and I really like both the look and 'sound' of the coax drivers I've experienced (like the new TC boxes and the Bag End stuff).

Anyway.... it will be fun to eventually follow the build.
