It's a coax, Chef, so the horn is already part of the driver assembly. :cool:

Here is the link to the Beyma coax part of the site. It is the last driver listed. I'm relatively clueless on this stuff, so not saying that is what I'm going with, but I remember Don talking about a Beyma 15 coax that was killer, so I'm assuming it is this one.

If any of you guys who know about this stuff see a particular issue with this driver, post up for me. Of course, Don will give me some guidance also.
 
Are you going to use a passive (fixed point/no l-pad) crossover?

Or, does it even need one? I dunno from coax drivers....

But, it specs well in terms of sensitivity, power handling and freq response:

Nothing special about coax. Just think of it as a tweeter that is bolted to the center of the driver and 'hidden' under the dust cover (although the EA CXL112 literally has a big horn sticking out of the middle of the driver). So, standard crossover with attenuator... nothing 'magic' about it.

It does have some slight benefits of 'time alignment' and 'single sound point sourcing' or whatever they call that. It's just nice to be able to fit a two way design in a small 'cube like' box versus having to leave space for a tweeter... not a huge deal.

The new TC cabs are all coax, which allows for that really nice, thin, vertical format, as are all the two way Bag End cabs and the old EA CXL cabs (they are still making a 112 coax at this point).

Again, more a 'tweeter location' thing than some sort of 'different' design or whatever (although again, the perception I get from the coax cabs I've owned is a more seemless 'all the sound coming from the same source' kind of thing, which is nice)

Edit: +1 That driver looks killer, and my guess is costs MUCHO dollars... but I'm not on much of a budget at this point, and it might be fun. Don always said he was looking for someone crazy enough to order one of these!

That driver seems designed for a small box, according to the literature. Of course, you would never tune a box down that low. My guess is, tuning somewhere in the 'typical 40's' should result in a great, smooth, fat tone. I believe they show the optimal tuning at 42 hz, if I'm reading that chart right (again, I stay out of that stuff... over my head).

You would be amazed at the full low end coming out of that LDS B&C Coax 112 cab that Jason has. Of course, it isn't massive SPL, but it sounds just like a 'baby 410L (I), which was my goal in spec'ing that cab. Don nailed that.

Should be fun.
 
I concur that 40-ish probably will work much better than 25-ish.
With the driver spec'd that way though, it "shouldn't be working too hard at 40-ish."

I'd be curious to know xmax and x-lim...
 
Woohoo! Just got an email from Mr. Oatman that my 2x15, 2x6.5 is prototyped and he'll post on it on TB by Thursday. Definitely excited, I'm gonna join this club soon enough!
 
I've been talking to Don for a little over 2 weeks now and we're finalizing some plans.

1x15 + 1x12 + 2x8 + tweeter

The bigger speakers are Eminence Neos and the 8's are Seleniums.

Reeeally looking forward to this one.

Nice. Not to be a jerk, but I keep reading posts that state different size speakers put together don't sound as "good" as having multiple speakers of a single size...the peaks and troughs of the sound waves fight each other at certain frequencies and distances; simplified yes, but I'm not a physicist or audio engineer! Just wanted to put that out there for you in case it has any bearing.
 
If they're crossed over with a lot of attention, it'll be fine, but I'm doubting the need for the 12 in that equation :)

If the 15 and 12 are both Kappalite LF's it'd probably wind up being OK as long as the crossover accounts for their differing high end profiles. Still not "optimal" but whatever.

Just curious, why not 2x15 with 1x8 plus tweet? Seems like that would do really well, considering all the 1x15/6's being built.

Whadaya-mean expensive?...USSpeaker is giving them away for $475.

I know nothing about this stuff.
Is the port tuned to the cab, the driver, or both in a ported design?
I mean, obviously the woofer limits come in to play for the cab internal volume and porting spec, but...if you had a typical ported 2x10 cab, and you changed to differing drivers, but ones that met or exceeded the low-end spec of the originals, would any port retuning be needed?
 
both - it is an integrated system [think: lungs, lips, mouthpiece, tuba] - you have to look at all the parts to predict behavior.

maybe - depends on how the drivers differ - take a look at all the T/S specs for a driver and you get an idea of the many ways one unit can differ from another - there is more to it than just picking out better "low end specs". For example, some drivers are not appropriate for cabs that have ports.
