Congrats #17 RedLeg. Are you digging the 70's pickup placement? That is exactly where I play my basses. I am sorry fellas, but Pacman has the most visually stunning bass pictured to date. Don't forget to post pics gentlemen. Pacmans choice of woods is second to none. There has got to be a spalted or another exotic top equally as beautiful out there. Do these other players a favor and educate them to the joys of a LOWEND JAZZ bass, everywhere you go!

I am digging the LEJ as a whole. To be honest, I had no idea what decade the pickups' spacing was from till you mentioned it. Overall I couldn't be happier with the bass. When I get to my new duty assignment, I will have Brian put blocks on the fretboard and she will be completed. Thanks for the #

I have read that the necks are "thin and fast" (which is great!) but I am trying to imagine what that translates into.

From pics, the necks look to be a D shape, with a fairly flat back profile, but it's hard to tell. Anyone got a set of calipers, or a ruler they could bust out for an eyeball measure? :D

Any input would be most welcome. I think I am really just trying to stall while I scrape together a deposit, and I like imagining the final product! :hyper:

Thanks in advance - and thanks as well for your collective enthusiasm about these basses. The strong "grassroots" kind of excitement about the LEJ is a big part of the reason that I am considering them for my first ever custom-built bass.

Call Brian at the Low End and he will for sure hook you up!! He's one of the easiest guys to work with and I trust him with bass advice. If you're going for a custom order, Brian can probably do whatever you'd like when it comes to neck girth.

I just got an older LEJ, total 70's vibe. 20 frets, black on black with block inlays and black binding, 70's pickup placement. It definitely sounds different than my other LEJ. Both basses are complete homerun basses, I can't get them to sound bad...the black one has a little more natural growl but still has the bottom end and clear top end.

That spalted is off the hook, diglo was hip to Brian's sound long before I was and correct me if I'm wrong has a great collection? And if I may borrow some descriptive ideas,it seems as if Brian and Chris's basses seem smarter than most.The neck and body seem as one unit, and their basses know which way to go. They build their basses with that Tennessee funk in them. And that 70's bridge pickup placement is the sweetest spot. To me it's like a "G" spot on a woman, you can't beat the results!:hiding:

Thanks Pedulla-2007! Brian knows no matter what other brand i consider buying, nothing come close to my LEJ's. As I'm typing now, I have my once was a PJ now a LEJ, sitting in lap. Couldn't get use to the P sound. This bad boy has that beans & cornbread fed southern gurl bottom end. I like bass! :hyper:

I will be in cookeville over the 4th of July holiday, so I am taking my LEJ to brian for some abalone (abalam) blocks for the board. Should really complete the look I am going for. Man I have a really understanding wife.

This use to be my PJ, but I just like the sound of JJ's better. Brian used 4 string pickups on this one...the lowend is straight vintage. Nope, no single coils, but dual humbuckers. Waiting on my White pearloid pickguard.

WOW!! That is straight up old school looking! I dig!! Ok...How many LEJ's does that make?? I am super jealous that you're so close to Brians shop, I think if I were closer I'd probably have about 8 LEJ's!!!! :bassist:

With the buckeye it will be 4. I'm putting wides on that one. RedLeg has the inca silver one I use to own.

It might be a good thing your far from the shop, you might pick up an LEJ addiction. LOL Just playing Brian! It's a cool place to hangout, plus you can compare the LEJ's to other high end models. And I can't forget the great LowEnd customer service staff.

Just wanted to say thanks to Brian today. He cut me a really sweet deal on some mods to my LEJ. Class act!

BTW, my silver LEJ is now getting abalone block inlays. I am thinking that they will really mesh well with the silver paint and pickup cover. Not to mention I am going back to high output single coils. I heard some today at his shop and was blown away!

Both of my LEJs have the single coils. I'd like to try the duals but I just can't bring myself to change :) I love the fact you can blend the two single coils in any way and it still sounds musical and warm.

Question - How many of you guys string your LEJs through the body? I've been messing around with string setups on my two LEJs and have found the following -

Thru Body - Slightly compressed tonally and an almost perfect balance across the frequencies. Slightly thicker tones and a bunch of sustain.

Thru Bridge - Slightly quicker, snappier tones. A little bit less compression and a touch more bite. Still tonally balanced - it is an LEJ after all ;) Sustains a touch less than thru body but in a really natural way.

So I've found these configurations for my basses -

5 string (35 scale) - B string thru body, others thru bridge. Just gives me a tight thumpy B and a bunch of zap across the other strings. Nothing unusual here I guess.

BUT

Hollowbody 4 string - E string thru bridge, ADG thru the body. Now I know this is a bit weird but is sounds awesome! This bass is ash/maple and has a natural scoop in the mids. So I've kept the E at the slightly looser tension and let it thud away with HB mojo. I've then strung the other strings at the slightly higher tension and they have gained in sustain and thickness. The bass just thuds off every string and sounds like it's been run through a really nice expensive compressor.

I also tried some TI flats on my HB but really didn't like the lighter tension of the strings. Rather than adjust my bass too much to accomodate them, I went back to rounds and will probably look for a nice fat set of flats to try out in future.

Brian strings up the 5's with the B through the body and EADG through the bridge. I like it.

I used to string my LEJ 6 all through the body and liked it.

I believe you stated... "after all its al LEJ"!

I had to string (due to lack of windings) the B ans E thru brigde, and the ADG through body. Honestly, I don't think my senses are sensitive enough to tell the differences between the 2. I do know that I prefer the feel on my right hand when all strings are through the body.
