low gain OD

I borrowed my guitarist's Fulltone OCD and that thing sounded phenomenal! It can do some low gain grit and go all the way up to some crazy over-driven stuff. Youtube search a video of it on bass.

EDIT: I have used my Sansamp BDDI for some low gain grit as well and it sounded pretty good.

I've been using the OCD for a few months now, I run it in "LP" mode for light overdrive, in "HP" I found it real bright, heavier drive but also noisy and less natural, though both ways sound good, LP was easier to get to unity volume for me, hp was tricky finding unity...

Joyo Ultimate Drive for an OCD clone (which some say has better low end than the OCD)

Ability to roll off high frequencies might be a plus though since OP is going direct - Joyo American? Or run the OCD into the American for half your budget

Edit: I know OP wants "bright" - but OD can get harsh in the high frequencies when going direct. Roll the tone/voice knob clockwise on either pedal for brightness and cut highs with the American's EQ for less harsh

I got my Barbershop hooked up and played some bass thru it last night ... started tweeking for the touchy tubelike effect that I wanted ... which it does pretty well .. !! sounds fairly natural and gradual as it breaks up a little ... the new version with the Treble cut switch does exactly as described ... which I think might come in handy for slightly dirtier settings ... which I have not tried yet ( have a few other effects for more dirt ) ... using passive Barts my current setting are ... volume at straight up noon , gain at around 11 am , Sag full clockwise , Treble cut in middle/off position ... starts to warm up / break up a little when digging in ... should be even more interesting when the amp models are turned on ( as they have their own drive gain stages ) current chain ... Barbershop - Rt66 V3 (comp/dirt ) - MXR m81 - Line 6 HD ProX

if you're looking for a little tubey grit ... if that 's what ' light OD ' means ... the Barbershop does that ...

a lot of the other OD/Distortion/Fuzz effects I've tried are OK for guitar , but are just to gritty and nasty to emulate simple tube warmth for bass ..

I basically replaced my DarkGlass B7K with the Barbershop and M81 ... soft grit and tone control

I never seem to hang on to dirt boxes for very long. Had a Pork Loin I never bonded with. Also a Malekko br;ASSMASTER, which was cool, but not for me. Hung onto my OCD and Mesa Flux Drive. Like those a lot for some things. I have been in the market for a Barbershop because it seems to fit the description of what I'm after. Quite by accident I popped into a local music store and the owner of Big Ear had a huge pedalboard of all his amazing sounding pedals for the day to let local players try out. The salesman told me if I was thinking about a Barbershop, I should try the Big Ear Frank, which in guitar terms is a 'clean boost' pedal. The low end was amazing and the pedal sounded incredible at every setting I tried. Took it to a gig later and left it on for the entire show. Haven't loved a pedal this much in a very long time. Made my Mesa M9 sound much more like a big thick tube amp. Just a little edge and I thought the tone was to die for

I'm not all that happy with my Boss ODB3 either for the same reason. For a distortion - it seems a bit distorted ... does that make any sense??? o_O

I can't seem to get a sound I like with it - so I spend hours here reading up on distortion pedals. The only problem is - every time I find a couple I think I might like; there's a new thread with more distortion pedals! :eek:

I like the look of the BB, and also the B3k ($250), but I don't know the nuances of the two or how they compare to the ODB3(?).
I want crunch without losing the lows, and zero fuzz.

Well, I just ordered a Barbershop, and I only partly blame this thread! I've actually wanted to give one a spin for some time now, but I tend to shake up my pedalboard for a bit, then keep it for months before I shake it up again. And it's been months since I've changed anything, so...

I can't wait to A/B(/C) it with my VT Bass (a pedal that gets a ton of playing time for me); ss/bs Mini; and a Catalinbread WIIO - all great pedals. Not to mention that I also have a ss/bs TAFM and a 3Leaf You're Doom on my board too. I was hoping to send a drive pedal packing, but instead I go and buy one. Seriously starting to consider getting a bigger board, especially because I'll need space when I decide what delay to upgrade my Flashback with (need presets). Maybe the Barbershop will send more than one packing...

Well thanks Dukeorock. For some reason, I liked the look of the pedal and your description so I decided to order the Frank od pedal. Fabulous pedal. It seems to be a little different than most I have had and have. While I love my blueberry and rattail, this is a great pedal to add to my board. It is a very subtle overdrive but still gives it a nice character while keeping "My" tone in tact.

Another great thing about the Barbershop is the hi cut switch which is a gradual roll off low pass filter...basically a speaker simulator. I've had it right there the whole time and just recently discovered the magic of this switch. It's a really valuable tool if you run directly to a PA.

Glad it worked out for you! Your last statement is what I love about this pedal. My basic tone stayed intact and Frank just added a bit of drive and character to it :)
