Low quality instruments vs. medium quality

Well....My local Craigslist had a Squire Precision Bass with a Jazz bass neck for sale for $250. I have a Fender jazz already, two old Japanese basses, an upright, a baritone guitar and a Mexican Guitarron. I really wanted a P-bass, even a Squire, but like you I am not in a group, my best songwriting buddy is leaving, I am not even jamming with anyone else at the moment and I chose not to pursue it. Today it's not for sale.

Did I NEED another bass? Of course not.

That'll teach me to make assumptions :)
Be aware it has completely different electronics to a standard Stingray so I have no idea what it sounds like. I made the suggestion soley based on you owning a stingray and assuming you loved it's sound but not it's playability

Well, it's a mix of both actually. Like I said before, it was a gift from someone special. Before that, I was playing my dad's Fender Precision basses, which I also like a lot, but are heavier than the Stingray and quite hard to play for me (harder than the Stingray). But anyway, it's a lot better bass than the HB and it is also dressed in flats, which to me makes a huge difference.

Also, cheers on my dad for not buying me a SS in the first place :roflmao:

Do you regret not buying it?

I've been playing bass for decades and I love the Mustang, but I'm lefty, and Fender doesn't feel there's a market for lefty's.

Would you happen to know what body shape the Mustang uses -- maybe a Strat or similar? I wish I could put a sunburst Mustang clone from Warmoth parts. I'm sure it will break 1K USD by the time I'm done.

The Mustang, Bronco and old Musicmasters seem to share a body that is unique to them. With several Mustang models coming out the past year, maybe Warmoth will catch the trend and offer one.

All i can say is that the Jag Short Scale is one of the best value instruments ive ever come across and I doubt that you'd be disappointed. I don't play mine very often as i have a couple of high-end full scales that are my main players but whenever i do pick up my Jag I'm blown away by how good it is.

Several people have suggested Ibanez short scales, but I didn't catch a reference to the
Ibanez GSRM20. I bought one because it reminds me of a guitar-the scale is just a little over 28". That said, it plays well and is fun to play. A lot of value for not a lot of money. If there's a trade-off on tone, it's too small to trouble me.

The SS Jag might be the best bet for off the rack and ready to play. I bought a Bronco to use just the neck on a project, and I was astonished at it's quality and fretwork. The problem is it's tuners, which can fairly be called junk. They can be changed, but you'd have to ream the holes. If you're comfortable with that, go for it. If not, go with the Jag.

You're leaning towards a SS Jag based on your budget and needs. You have made an excellent choice! People love to point out more expensive or unobtainable hear (in Portugal) - that doesn't help you any. I have a SS Jag and I love mine! Yes I've done a mod but it wasn't mandatory. It has LaBella flats, I have it set up perfectly and it plays great! I think you'll love one, I wish you much luck!

Yeah, I was just about to say that. Here in Portugal, there aren't many Mustangs being sold secondhand. I pretty much browse the classifieds everyday, and I check all the websites, that's how I got such a good deal on the HB. Anyway, I'm not really ready to spend that much money on a bass, especially if I'm going for it blind, since whatever I choose I'll have to buy from the Internet without ever trying it. I know Thomman, for instance, has a good policy on returns, but I'd prefer to save the trouble. And besides, the Mustang really is out of my price range. Even the Jag is out of my price range. Have I mentioned that I'm a kid from Portugal? :roflmao:
I found a store which I can rent a Jag from, and I can choose to buy it in the end, just by paying the difference. If I keep it, is like paying installment, but if I don't, I would be throwing away money that I could be putting into another bass...
