It's also 6 months in the future. The ADK laptop I got is spec'd higher and cheaper now. You could get the same ADK laptop with a 2.4 ghz cpu for less than I bought mine for now (and I had a $50 discount at the time). Prices fluctuate. FW 800 is the only thing that's missing, and eSATA is faster anyway (cost me a $50 upgrade card). All my FW devices need power even if they're on 6 pin, so the 6 pin port doesn't make much difference.

I've been starting to look at laptops for music production. As others have said ADK seems to be the best bet on the PC side--I've also heard good things about the Link Removed.
When I've spec'd out ADK/Sonica they come in about $600-$800 less than a comparable MacBookPro with 3-year Apple Care. The ADK and Sonica include 3 & 2 year warranties respectively, while Apple care is an essential $300 "option".
Most of the people I know who have bought Mac laptops in the last 2 years (including my wife, my boss, and several close friends) have had to make frequent trips to the "Genius Bar" for HD failures, cracked cases, display problems, and sleep/power management issues. These are people who take good care of their stuff and are not power users.
I'm not anti-Mac but I am concerned about whether they'll hold up to gigging. I've also heard that most of the Santa Rosa processor machines released last fall have Lucent/Agere FireWire controllers that don't play well with FW audio interfaces.

4th year with my Mac, use it on all the gigs ( 4-5 times a week )

On a couple a millions unit sold , I think it's normal that there will be a couple of faulty ones....Like everything on the market.
Lots of "code 18" problems for me though , that's a problem located 18 inches in front of the computer...

I have only had one thing go wrong with my 17" MBP in the year and a half that I have had it: the battery went bad. I did not purchase the apple care plan, yet I took it into the apple store, told them the problem, showed them my battery, and they gave me a new one free of charge. It was the best customer service I have ever received! I do have a feeling I got lucky though. I am also by no means suggesting you shouldn't get the apple care though. It is an important thing to get, but when I got my computer I didnt feel the need to get it. I have been pretty lucky though. I also know how to take care of the computer and fix most minor problems myself.
The hardware failure/fragility problems with macbooks baffles me. I support several of them at work and IMO they are as rock solid as any laptop. I've seen 1 cd eject issue, and that's pretty much it for hardware problems. These things get taken out on the road all the time and have help up quite well so far (they've only had them for ~6 months). I have heard a lot of anectodal problems with macbooks, and there is some kind of "screen blanking" bug with mac OS which I don't believe has been resolved (at least according to my mac owning friend), but overall they are pretty rock solid.
The Lucent/Agere firewire issue would worry me if I was to buy one. I don't think they're using it now in the newest models, but supposedly these will display TI if you check the chipset at startup, but still do not work properly with a lot of audio interfaces. It's a gamble with pretty much any laptop these days :-\ Except maybe ADK.. At least I haven't heard of any ADK problems (except people whining that Scott is a little too vehement in his forums posts from time to time. He knows his **** though.).

I had this happen with my MacBook, Apple took care of it in a blink (I did have AppleCare) and it has been trouble free since. That is the only problem I have ever had with my MB in the last 2 years. It has been the most stable and trouble free computer I have ever owned...I also use it more (way more) than any computer I've ever owned, much WOW (Warcraft), Garagebanding, photos, surfing, etc etc.
