Mad Professor Bass OD???

Hey guys, also received my BBOD Friday.

I have owned the Hematoma (black w/purple knobs), still own (and wouldn't mind selling) the normal Fulltone Bassdrive, a Blackstone Appliances Overdrive, and a bunch of other things, I think the BBOD is probably the best-sounding of that lot so far (granted the Blackstone is for guitar).

It sounds good through my little 10" Yorkville practice amp, and also good through an Ampeg VT22/Fender Bassman all-tube 6x12 stack. I really enjoy the Nature/Distortion knobs all the way CCW for bass, as that feels very warm and dynamic and how I think drive pedals should sound/feel. For guitar I like those knobs a little higher, even all the way up, to get a more high-gain Marshall/whatever sound (I have not heard a cranked Marshall JCM800/900 in person, but that's what it reminds me of from records, ie Smashing Pumpkins, etc).

By comparison, I found the Hematoma to not play very nicely frequency-wise, as it always seems too 'mumbly' or alternatively harsh sounding, and the Fulltone is good but there was a LACK of good 'mmmm' frequencies to me that sort of blended it too much into a mix.

Anyhow, just initial thoughts, will be recording and playing with it this week. OH, and it sounds pretty awesome with the Phat Phuk B in front of it, haha.

Most treble boosters cut out a ton of low end, so I'd say the only way to go for bass with a treble booster is the Analogman Bass Beano Boost. One of my favorite all time pedals.

I agree with ZombiCrow that having the Nature and Drive knobs turned fully CCW sounds warm and dynamic, great overdrive tone. Another setting i like is NATURE knob at 2:45 and DRIVE around 7:00. As i said before it sounds pretty close to Tools "Schism" bassline, very clean and pronounced. Unfortunately i still havent got to run it through my big rig,jerks cancelled practice today :(

I will say this though, most everybody will probably have different results with this pedal, as with most pedals. I think mostly because of different basses but also because of how you EQ your bass and or amp. I found a few settings i liked right away with how MY EQ is set up.
I then set everything flat(bass,mid,highs,pups) and some of those tones i liked with MY regular EQing, i didnt care for. Then i boosted some things that i usually dont and found some killer tones. So there is still alot to find out about this thing. But i think a EQ pedal is in order.

It depends on what setting you have it in, the pedal has 3 settings, hi, mid, and low. The high setting has a tad more bass than the guitar Beano Boost in the low setting (I've owned both versions). The mid setting provides solid but not overbearing low end, and really cuts through. That's my favorite setting. The low setting can actually have more low end than your uneffected signal, and is pretty beefy/heavy.

Also the term treble booster is a bit misleading because these pedals don't get harsh through a good tube amp (and they're more like mid boosters). Just really nice od/distortion character that can kind of get into fuzz too if you push your amp hard enough with them. One of my favorite things to do with the bass beano boost is to set it up for a very heavy fuzz tone with my amp, then roll my volume knob back on my passive bass to achieve a whole range of overdriven/distorted tones as well. In this manner a treble booster can be very versatile.

Wow, how not to demo a pedal. Even if I spoke German that would irritate me.
The thing about any demo clip is that if the player in the clip has a different style, is going for a different sound, using different technique, different equipment, then you're not going to hear what you're searching for.
I've heard different players on this forum get very different results from the same pedal, one made me think the pedal was awesome, the other crap.

Sorry don't have a recording interface just yet,keep on buying pedals first. What I do have is a brand new laptop thats equipped with a webcam and mic. Havent got into it yet but its got programs for posting yootube vids,skype and those sorts of things. Would that even be useful for anyone here? Considering the crappy quality of the video compression from these sites? And im not sure how well the mic would pick it up anyway... If anything its a 720p HD camera so I could get some footage of it......which is probably pointless.

Oh ive also got one of them FLIP ultra camcorders. Would that work? Oh **** my sister just got a USB mic for her computer,I think its for vocals but I could try that. Anyone?

I've got one shipping out to me later today. Should be here by the end of the week. I'll try to throw up some clips when I get a chance. I'll try it through the four basses I own:
Stingray 5
Jazz
Hellcat VI
Fretless 5

As far as recording, I'd give it a try with the mic. I don't have a mic, so I'll be trying it through my recording interface direct, as well as through my amp (RH450) and then using the direct out into my recording interface. We definitely need at least one person to record this pedal mic'd as it will definitely sound different recorded direct than it does recorded through a mic setup.

I can't say how well the mic your sister purchased will sound with a bass, though I'm sure it wouldn't overload (hopefully) as bad as either your laptop or the FLIP camcorder would. At the least, you could give it a try and see how it sounds.

I’m still not entirely enthusiastic about that video, so I’m interested to see what clips other people come up with. Looking forward to seeing what it sounds like with the Drive and Nature all the way down like Zombi and Outlaw mentioned. Low-gain and dark is what I’m currently looking for. :)

That was my favorite setting. Nature off and just a tiny bit of drive.

Is it as thick as the sound I've heard in the BJFE clips? Right now I'm really after that dark murky voice that the original Blueberry has. I've got enough awesome overdrives that do the "just barely there" thing really well. I'm looking for one with a unique voice, not another "it does everything" overdrive, if that makes sense. :)

Nearly $50 more for a pedal that looks to have considerably lower build quality (according to shots posted on another forum, findable through the links) seems like a raw deal. The Mad Professor looks downright heavenly inside by comparison, but until we get side-by-side clips I guess we won't know. The Mad Professor still sounds beautiful to my ears, and I don't use that word lightly about effects, haha!

Do we have anyone who yet has BOTH pedals and can A/B them and attempt to match settings? I know, I know, that's what everyone is asking :bassist:
