Could have been worse, a novice bass player I know was turning the wrong capstan. She was looking at the tuner not change, but plucking the wrong string.
basically the string she was adjusting was not the same string the tuner was recognizing
so she just kept turning it until actually breaking the tuning machine

Not to breaking point, but I've done this more than once...

Practice changing strings when you're new to the instrument is also a good thing.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. My first band in high school didn't even realize that there was such a thing as dropped D. So when the guitar players learned tabs for a song in D, They just played the bar cord while still tuned to E! Everything is a learning experience.

I was a new player back in 1995, and
I was 14 playing at church. They had this great neck through Yamaha BB series sunburst 4 string, that I was using and this was before I knew about looping your cord back through the strap to avoid pulling it out of the jack. So anyways in a fit of musical excitement, I stepped on the cord pulling it, the jack, some wiring and a huge chunk of wood out of the bass. So at this point the bass is no longer producing an amplified sound, so I, horrified with what had happened proceeded to go sit out the rest of the service leaving my injured bass alone on the stage......

Once--I forgot I had in ear audio on and walked off stage and pulled the Aviom A360 over---and many of the buttons broke off scattering across the stage. $800 unit--they shrugged their shoulders and said--"insurance covers it."

When I first starting playing I had the strap on wrong....got laughed at.

Hehehe, you said "strap on". And now you know where my mind is!

Hey OP, you learned two important things. Drop D means tune down to D. And that mistakes happen, and it's only music, so no one died. Whew!
