Made this today

They made me 'love' music.
I like many different types of music but this genre will always be my favorite.

Geezer is just an amazing bassist, imho the best ever.

I feel the same. Except that I totally missed the boat with these amazing rock bands (Sabbath, Zeppelin, Who, Cream, Hendrix).

Even when I was introduced to RUSH at an early age (many years later I got all their CDs, 2112 being my favorite) I didn't like it, thought the vocals were just some dude screaming. I should have clued in during high school but even then with cool bands and music all around I didn't clue in.

Fast forward several decades and I'm listening to all this stuff for the first time and loving all of it. I just listened to Yes, their first few albums, don't know the song but the bass line on it is heavy and cool and you can feel it thru the speakers. Can't wait to discover more of these gems.

Sabbath hit me pretty hard when I first bought their 'Sold Our Soul...' disc. Everything from the vocals to guitar to bass and drums just jived well with me. I now have all their discs and am listening to stuff I never heard on the radio. I love their sound.

Your pick guard also reminds me that most kids these days will never enjoy the limited access we had to only albums. It was an event to go to the mall, hit the record store and pull out that new RUSH album all wrapped in plastic. What weird but obvious cover art would they have on this new album?

Then you peel back the plastic and discover the album opens up like a book, you have more art, some band photos, then the sleeves with all the lyrics and the vinyl in them. Putting the album on the turntable, having your friends over to listen and talk about it (no portability with vinyl like we have with CDs and iPods now).

And we used to listen to the album front to back, not pick a song here or there and lose the theme the bad had spent building for their songs.

I am SO diggin the artwork pickguard... I've debated getting a clear guard, so that I can swap out the artwork when I want... Love it!

I'm a huge Keith Haring fan (the artist responsible for the whole piece) but I have to agree w/ James. I have kids, and whenever I hear that overgrown rat, I want to throw something at the TV :D

When I have time, I'll give everyone here my true rant on the evils of the disney corporation (which if memory serves me, was actually the inspiration for the Keith Haring piece to begin with). :spit:

Dude Keith Haring was great, man i'm impressed because my cousin who was an artist did stuff with keith haring back in the late 80's early 90's or so, he was a good artist..

A lot of the artwork from those bands was unique and amazing. I loved the cover of RUSH's 2112 and Hemispheres.

I remember being in highschool and going to a friend's place. He had the album with the cover actually on the vinyl (yet another friend had an orange vinyl one).

We played it front to back, we walked over to the mall (1/2 hr walk) in amazing late spring weather, I walked over to the Rush section, pulled out a copy of Hemispheres and we walked over to my place to listen to it again. I always wondered how Rush would finish their Cygnus X-1 song. I was never sure I was happy with their Greek mythology closing, I think I was expecting something more scientific.

GBGLJE; the first concert I ever saw was Signals, I remember sitting up in the rafters and wondering what that smelly cloud of smoke was during the concert. I found out later what it was. And I remember that concert was LOUD.

I wish I could have seen a Sabbath concert. Youtube has it's uses.

For those of you not familiar, this is the cover to Black Sabbath's first album.

That was the first album I bought.

i was fortunate enough to see Rush twice in Dec '75 at two different venues after they dropped the Fly By Night album, both shows opening for REO Speedwagon, back when they were still a hard rock band,( Gary Richrath was an AMAZINGLY TALENTED guitar player ) ( before Kevin Cronin took over with all his girly rock stuff ) i still remember kickin back, burnin a fattie, while they were doin Workin Man,, By-Tor and the Snowdog, Anthem, In The End ( one of my favs ) Geddy playin his Ric's, WWWAAAYYY before he had a sig jazz.

very good times indeed

then saw Rush again in '76 after they dropped All the World's A Stage,, they opened for ZZ Top

all 3 were incredible shows & Geddy's vocals were simply amazing, ( but i think his nuts finally dropped after those early years, & he has no where near the vocal range he once had ) would like to see em again someday

saw many of the now called Classic Rock bands in the mid / late 70's early 80's & loved them all

edit; just checked out some of Rush's early stuff on youtube,,, man,, it sure takes you back to a much simpler time....

That is fantastic. I wish my bass had a pickguard so I could so something similar.

I suppose I might be a 'kid' by your standards (mid-20s), but all I have to say is this: TOOL

Amazing music, album art, and show visuals. I know it's a little OT, but they still hold their own when pitted against even the most awesome rock shows of the 70s, 80s, and 90s....

I think youtube is the best thing to happen since the invention of the computer. I spend hours on it everyday.

I just posted a video of the bass in action. I sadly use a handheld digital camera to record with so sorry for the bad audio/video. Link:

Very very cool video and bass. I've been jamming (me on drums) with a guitarist on two Sabbath songs; Never Say Die and Johnny Blaze. Tomorrow we meet again to do Paranoid and Iron Man.

I just got my first bass last night (SX model). A friend will help set it up and put new strings on it soon. And the learning will begin....first song I'm learing is anything Sabbath!

thanks!
Congrats on the new bass, I hear good things about SX basses, I had an SX strat copy that was really nice. :bassist:

The first two sabbath albums are in standard E tuning, they switched to dropped C# tuning for the next several albums up until "Technical Ecstacy" where they went back to standard E. "Never Say Die" is in standard E tuning as well.
I never ran into any problems playing nearly all Sabbath songs in standard E tuning though, you just play in a different position. So every song you mentioned above is in E tuning.

I'm starting to really love the "Never Say Die" album., especially Junior's Eye's. That album gets a bad rap but I'm really starting to think it could be one of their best.
Good luck with the new bass.

the first song i learned on bass was paranoid, i remember that i couldn't keep up with the album when i played fingerstyle:p

excellent song, and i'd definitely reccomend that you start with it

I got my SX Friday and after getting help setting it up and putting new strings I've been playing it the last few nights.

I knew I'd like learning bass, I just didn't expect to get so totally into it. Hours fly by while I'm playing it and the only thing that makes me put it on the stand is that I can't feel the fingers of my left hand!

I'm going to visit the music store soon and pick up a book or two on Sabbath bass music. I prefer learning notes vs tab. Any recommendataions on the best (and most accurate) Sabbath bass books? I tried searching for tab on the web (and I was going to write out the notes for myself) but the links I've found don't go anywhere.

I was listening to a new CD set I picked up: The Who, Live at Leeds. That first CD is mindblowing! And the bass lines are wicked.

yeah man, that one's a classic, john is a tank.
i think alot of websites have been removing tabs because of copyright issues, so i can't help you on that.

Liking the new SX bass huh..I guess now you're "Hooked"..um sorry couldn't resist.

Live at Leeds is one of my all time favorites, love that version of "young man blues". JE goes off.

Try your best to learn by ear. It's simple really, if it sounds wrong then try a different note :bassist:

Well after a long day I managed to throw some time on the bass late last night. I put on Paranoid and searched around on the fretboard for the notes that seemed to match up (sounds like E, D and G is played most of the time then C, D, E). But eventually my left hand fingers were so sore and numb I called it a night. Pain and all I'm totally digging the bass.

I've finally listened to the whole first Leeds CD. Wow. The energy coming out of those songs, the bass riffs, Moon's crazy drumming, and that guitar, what a band. I have a whole new appreciation for their abilities to rock now. I remember when I was in grade school (grades 6-8) a kid brought one of their albums to school. It was Who's Next where they're walking away from some concrete structure and had all taken a leak. Talk about a statement.
