Every time I see this thread I think it's regarding Madison cabinets... :-/
Ok I specifically wanted input from my new friends about how, where, to book gigs for my band.
I didn't grow up here in Madison, and haven't gigged regularly for a long time (although we've done a couple of gigs) so I'm pretty out of touch with what are norms and what kind of places would be a good fit for us.
Some background. We are a 5 piece band - bass, guitar, drums, keys and female vocalist/percussion. In addition to our female singer our guitarist also does about half the vocal leads and our drummer adds some background help. We play mainly r&b/soul music from the 60's and 70's. A lot of Stax, Atlantic, Motown, etc. Basically good music to dance to.
So what I'd like to know is (in your opinion)
1. Which local clubs would be the most receptive to our style of music?
I'd suggest watching the isthmus and see where similar bands are getting booked--or go to those bands websites and see where they are playing
2. Who should be approached (and how)?
You can call these clubs and ask who books the bands--speak w/ them and find out what's important to them.
3. What can we expect in financial terms?
depends on the bar--a fixed fee or guaranty vs. the door or 100% door I bet 80% of bar gigs pay between $250-$500--unless are established w/ a following that you can guarantee show up
4. What is the norm for # and duration of sets? 3-4 45-60 minutes each
5. Which (if any) of the clubs offer PA and someone to run the PA?
very few--only the biggest places
it's tough booking gigs--you need experience to get experienced--a conundrum! be persistant, professional, flexible, try for opening or co-gigs w/ folks you are friendly with
General experience, advice, suggestions are also appreciated.
Any favorite and/or unfavorite venues?
any place that will hire us is a favorite, any place that won't is an unfavorite![]()
and we've put all our marbles into Gigmasters and it's working well for us in terms of better, higher paying gigs.
Good luck, man.
Jeff or Pedro - you mind? I deleted most of my pms yesterday and I'd rather not re-type all that. Thanks. Can I get a PM as well?
