Count me in... Mainah'... born and bred. Woudn't call myself a "bassist" yet really but I am trying.
I don't play bass but I appreciate a good bassist. I'm actually a guitarist trying to find a bassist to start a band with. I also was born and raised in Maine.
Hello Mainah's.
I'm considering a move to Portland. It seems to offer a fairly mellow lifestyle, affordability and has enough going on to keep things interesting. If any of you can offer some tips or insights on Portland and Maine in general, I'd love to hear them.
The cold winters are fine as I love to ski and really like Sunday River. I'm also aware of Mud Season. What I'd like to know about is any kind of music scene, chances of employment, etc.

Well, I DO drink Moxie and occasionally go to Mardens...and have been playing bass in Maine for years! It's Saturday, so it must be time to bake some beans! Greetings from lovely Veazie, Me!
Regarding "affordability", what a lot of people don't know (until it's too late) is that Maine is rated as having the highest overall tax burden in the U.S., even over notoriously high tax states like NY and "Taxachusetts". A lot of folks retire here to enjoy Maine's beauty and laid back lifestyle only to be driven out by its lack of affordability.
That aside, it is truly a unique and beautiful place to live.
Type of taxes that make the total burden of State taxes are:
· Property taxes (they tend to vary greatly per location)
· Sales and Gross Receipts (beware more than one state agency may have taxing power)
· Specialties State Taxes (alcoholic, motor fuels, insurance, public utilities, tobacco and other products)
· Licenses, corporate, hunting & fishing, motor vehicles, motor vehicle operators, individual income,
interest and dividends, death, gift, documents, and stock transfers.
· Plus any other State Tax
Top Five States with Highest State Tax Burden

· Maine 13.5%
· New York 12.9
· Ohio 12.0
· Minnesota 11.9
· Hawaii 11.7

Thanks for the info. It is useful. I'm going up to Portland on Thursday to check out the city for a few days. The tax situation is the first negative I've heard about the place. I currently live in New Jersey where I pay $10k in property tax for a 1 acre lot and an 1,800 sq. ft. house. Never been too happy about that, especially since I don't have any kids and most of it is school tax.
In all other regards, it's a beautiful and unique place to live.
P.S. Regarding property tax, I pay more for about the same size lot and square footage.
I appreciate your responses. If I like it enough, I don't think the tax situation will be a deal breaker.
I wasn't trying to be negative, just responding to an earlier comment about Maine being affordable. I spent most of my life in Massachusetts and Connecticut, Maine has the highest cost of living that I've experienced. Love it here though ....
I live in N.J. but have a camp in E. Machias does that count? I suffer all year waiting to go to camp for a few weeks. The only good thing about being in jerzey is there's a lot more work and clubs to play. I'm south of N.Y. and a few miles from Philly.

I am born and raised in Maine and my profile proudly states this. Plenty of work and music if you know where to look and are willing to be creative.
