Several months ago I took delivery of a Fodera Monarch 4-string with EMG J/J pups. As most of you know, delivery times on Foderas are often measured in YEARS rather than months so when I found a gorgeous, new Koa over Mahogany Fodera Monarch for sale at Dave's Guitar in Wisconsin I jumped all over it even though I was a little anxious about the EMG J/J setup.
The bass arrived and was simply amazing. Gorgeously built, phenomenal to play and with excellent tone. My only nagging issue was that the EMG's were a touch muddy in the low end and a touch "electronic" in some of the mids.
This past week, I had the EMG's swapped out for Seymour Duncan / Fodera custom humbucking J/J's. WOW, what a difference. The low end is now tight and percussive and the mid range has become far more clear, transparent and articulate. Favor the bridge pickup and the bass positively growls.
The underlying tone of the instrument remains, but everything just sounds better. It is kind of like the difference between hearing someone's voice over an excellent telephone connection and then being in the same room with them (the EMG's being the telephone)...
