This is what I've done to my last three electric basses:

Disassemble bass

Recontour and refinish the body

String with TI Jazzflats

Set-up and adjust intonation

Play!

usually play it for an hour so I can feel if anything is wrong.

then throw on some ernieball 45's, play around with knobs and the like till i find a setting a like. change action, pickup height, intonation. also add strap locks.

I bought a Spector Legend when Amazon was blowing them out. Becasue I'm legally blind I couldn't upgrade the electronics myself and I had my dad upgrade the electronics. Ever since then I've felt really attached to that bass because my dad worked oni it. I feel like it has a tiny bit of him in it and will never get rid of it.

Every bass I've ever owned, I have chipped, scratched, or otherwise bashed the crap out of the headstock. Years ago, I actually used to try to prevent the inevitable, and would cringe the first time I whacked a ceiling fan, or a beam in a guitar players basement.

I just got notice from Carvin that my SB-4000 neck is on it's way to me. I may try whacking a few golf balls with it in the yard before I put it on my Precision bass.

• Replace tuners with Hipshot Ultra-lites.
• Replace chrome hardware with color of my choice (black or gold depending on bass)
• If 2-band preamp, upgrade to Aguilar OBP-3.
• Drill hole and wire up killswitch
• Replace strings with either Fodera Heavies or custom JustStrings steel string
• Setup
• If neck is not satin, sand it down and lay a clear satin coat over it.

For me it seems like it looks a bit warmer (color wise). I have a mapleglo ric and it didnt really seem to be mine until it looked more worn and more warm. I know kinda weird but thats what i think.

Normally I sand off the back of the neck, make it feel nice and smooth.

Besides that I write on my instruments, Tom Morello-style. My guitar says "Perfection is the enemy" and my main bass says "Louder than god". I do only own cheap instruments though, wouldn't do that to a €1000,- bass.

Hmmm, maybe cheapness is my thing. That would explain my taste in women, present girlfriend excluded...

Pretty basic procedure here: New strings, if needed, straplocks, adjust action and intonation, play around with the settings.
