I live in a small town, miles away from the nearest city.
I have achieved effectively nothing as a bass player.
I've been playing for 36 years, and have helped write/record several albums and played well over a thousand gigs.
I listen to Jaco, Michael Manring, and countless others and know I will never achieve their level of technical ability.
But...
I play in a band with some of my best friends and gig a couple times a month. I also play six to eight services a month at my church, which is fantastic.
There are many times when I play and I retreat into what I call my "hamster bubble." I am conscious of only two things: my fingers moving over the fretboard, and the percussion that I am helping to drive. In these moments, I am completely unaware of what is happening around me. If a group of clowns walked on stage, I would not know. It's like floating in the music, and I am not even thinking about the notes I am playing. I watch my hands as if I'm a spectator.
In those moments, I have no desire to play like Jaco, Davie504, or some little kid prodigy. They are all far more skilled than I am, but this is my gig, surrounded by people I love, and lost in the music that I am helping to create.
That is enough.
