Maki's Two Cents (part 5)

Hey Maki,

I traded into a Peavey Grind 5 recently and am considering a few upgrades based on spare parts I have lying around (Piezo bridge w/buffer circuit, EMG 40P5 for the neck p/u). I'm going for a nice warm, rounded, full, fat, and mellow tone. Something less aggressive than my Basslines loaded Warwick.

Should I go w/an EMG 40DC in the bridge, or another 40 P5?

Yeah. I also user Gilette Fusion. I got a free razor and cartridge in the mail a few years back, so I ditched my Gilette Mach 4 (or whatever it was called - I also got that in the mail too), and liked it. Then when I went to buy the cartridges for it, I realized that I was the chump that fell for the oldest trick in the bag. Get them hooked onto your product (whether it be crack, meth, cocaine, or razors) and then charge them through the roof when you come back for more. In their defense, these blades do last longer than your typical disposable, but still, the price they charge is ridiculous. I remember the Mach 4 (or whatever it was called) was a little bit more reasonable. I found the best deals at Costco, but even then, their still expensive. So I suggest you grow a beard in protest. My two cents. :)

I'm going to have a luthier friend of mine install a Carvin sb-4000 neck on my precision. I'm really not a fan of the Fender inline tuning keys, and this guy can do pretty much what ever he wants. What configuration would look best? 2X2? 3X1? Or should I just have him cut the thing to look like a Fender and put all 4 in a straight line again?

What's the Feng Shui book say about that?

I've never liked Carvin's tuners. That's been my only complaint about Carvin basses. I have a fender looking head on my four banger and I feel that the tuners are small, and would look better with the larger flatter knobs on it. The knobs on my LB75 are adequate and that's a 3x2 split. But for a four banger, I've always felt that the balanced 2x2 looks best when you're talking about Carvin. My two cents. :)

Sorry, if you find riding a beach cruiser (one of the easiest bikes in the world to ride) difficult that you might never understand. First off, Surfing, in the summer, is best (crowd wise) during the week, not weekend. You might have a few more kids in the water because schools out, but for the most part this is not a problem. Huntington can get crowded, but it's also pretty easy to find a spot away from the pier where it's not so crowded. Still with that said, when you get to a certain level, catching waves is not a problem when you know everyone out there. Additionally, don't let the number of people on the sand distort your perception of the number of people in the water. With that said, most people in water are swimmers bobbing around on the inside break, they are not really a factor for most people surfing the waves breaking on the outside. Hope this helps. Maybe you're ready to take your training wheels off your cruiser. My two cents. :)

If you have good swimming ability, it takes about 3 months of humiliation before you're able to start standing up consistently, then it takes a good year to get to the point where you can actually start carving turns. That's for the average person with good swimming ability. But if we're talking about you, you might as well just quit now. My two cents. :)
