Maki's Two Cents (part 5)

Nice... you're good. It wouldn't really be you're 2 cents but... when and how did this topic get started? How did others discover your insightfulness?
I would ask your bass teacher for suggestions. Still with that said, you have to shop and research the schools you're considering. Have a plan A and a plan B. Plan A is your dream (Study bass and be a rock star and make millions of dollars) Plan B is something that applies your interests in a practical matter (sound engineer, architecture, engineer, business management, law, professional PITA, etc). The school of your choice would offer you both. I would recommend you major in pounding sand because you're good at it. My two cents.

Maki, how does one find ways to kill time at work when there is nothing to do with limited internet access?
I suggest you start with reggae rhythm sections (drums and bass). Sly and Robbie, the Barret brother, Style and Flabba (Lincoln 'Style' Scott and Erol 'Flabba' Holt) are three good places to start. From there you'll start discovering things and sounds that you like. Pandora is great for this stuff. Some of it will venture into Dancehall, some will venture into Electronica, some will venture into roots. Also look at mixers and producers. King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry, Mad Professor are good places to start.
Start with the Barret brothers. That's Bob's rhythm section. Robbie Shakespeare was an understudy of 'Family Man' Barret so this would naturally segue into Sly and Robbie. Sly and Robbie is huge. They've recorded so much stuff. Even stuff outside of reggae. It's pretty crazy.
My personal favorite is Style and Flabba though. They're responsible for all of Gregory Isaac's fatness. (Night Nurse is a great album because it comes with sick dub version of some of the tracks at the end). When they record with a singer like Gregory they are usually listed as the Roots Radics, but when they are doing dub work it's often Dub Syndicate. Dub Syndicate is really heavy fat dub. My personal favorite. My two cents.
Not sure. There was a thread started by a sexy asian about how can Maki twist anything into a story about sexy asian chicks. I think someone suggested that I start an advice column somewhere in there. So I started my two cent thread. The details are kind of hazy. That was about 4500 posts ago. My two cents.

Explore 'the lobby'. Better yet you want to stay awake. You should explore other areas of TB. Check out the DB side. Actually, that'll put you to sleep too. Download tabs to all the songs in your collection. Collect pics of jigglies from all the sexy asian chicks on your phone. Try to get chicks you'd never imagine sending you pics to send you pics. Works for me all the time. That's a lot of fun. Or if you really want to be productive, start writing that novel/screenplay you've been kicking around in your head. If you're stuck on a part of your story, you can take a side trip with writing lyrics, and if that doesn't work you can start jotting down notes for a business plan. My two cents.

Ah, a kiwi. They are not very well known over here. A buddy of mine who traveled to NZ brought them back and played them for me. The first song I heard was Roady. They recently came out here for their first US tour, and they literally only played a few dates in California. I caught one of them in San Diego. Great band. They didn't have drums or a bass either, but it still rocked and sounded really good. I would love to see them cruising in their own environment. Another kiwi band that I really like is The Black Seeds. Those guys are great straight up reggae. My two cents.

I can't sleep. All I can think about is reworking the signal chain on my pedal board (as well as replacing a few pedals that are just eating up to much space). I have no garage to retreat to and redoing my pedal board would keep the family awake. Please advise.

Hi maki I am currently in a relationship with this person who is not who I originally thought she was. It started out great for the first few dates, we really clicked like one hot lonely tranny to another. Or at least so I thought. On the third date she asked me up to her place, things got pretty hot and heavy and before I knew it I was naked no way to escape wile she showed me her nintendo. It was not what I had expected! the hookups where all wrong. So now six months in what started as gilt sex has become a full blown relationship and she just asked me to marry her. My family and friends, her family and friends are all very happy for us. I want out and nobody knows.

First off you have a similar situation as me. You are in desperate need for a man cave. Start building pronto. In the meantime here's what I do. I'm also running through my pedal board in my head and I understand the sleep you can lose over this. I already know what needs to be done, I just have to sell off a couple of pedals and make a purchase or two to complete my vision. As far as a setup for playing, it really depends on your amp/head set up. I run a pre/power set up. My preamp is a Ampeg SVP-BSP. If I want to listen to my board, I run line outs into my interface that I record with (MOTO 8pre), and set the output of my recording program to the MOTU. Then I can hear what my bass sounds like clean through my head (without the cabs) in my headphones. My preamp is a split channel pre. So I run line outs into two different input channels on my MOTU (clean and dirty). My fx loop runs on my dirty, so I turn on the input channel I want to listen to. You probably could do it a lot simplier than this, but I recommend that work the angle so that you can justify the construction of a man cave and the purchase of DAW with a nice interface. Just tell your wifey that you NEED all this stuff in order to play without disturbing them. It's best to deliver the idea over grilled cheese sandwiches. My two cents.
