Situation: Wife thwarts upcoming, paying gig(which I had committed to a week ago)- a b-day GTG w/the other B's, which she informed me of WEEKS ago. Money & future gigs are involved- apologize to bandleader? I did, BTW, but thought it might serve some other poor schwub to know the proper protocol here.
This is a tough one. This is what I call the art of damage control. Man fails everytime he tries to apply logic to a negotiation with a creature that has no sense of logic, and generally makes decisions based upon some weird blend of hormones, a notion of logic, and gut impulse. Logically, a man would think, that if he puts in quality time by satisfying something like the bullet points of a honey-do list, that this amount of time would accrue in a sort of time bank account with time that could be fairly withdrawn from account for his own purposes. Therein lies man's mistake. There is no logic. There is no time bank. There is only damage control. So if you have a scheduling conflict you need to run through the following 5 steps.
1. Decide what you WANT to do. You might be 'ok' doing either, but you need to commit to which one you WANT to do and then proceed to step 2. If what you WANT to do is something that coincides with your wife's plan, then simply deal with this conflict without her knowing. Do not involve her into the situation, because where a man perceives problems and inevitably seeks to solve them, a woman perceives problems and inevitably wants to talk about them, discuss them, mull over them, run them by her friends over coffee, complain, compare them to other problems she might have heard about with her friends, or to people on daytime TV, etc, and then steer the problem toward comparisons to other problems you may or may not have. This would inevitably lead to you turning on your white noise filter, going to your happy place, and ultimately tuning her out, which would lead to another discussion about how you never pay any attention to her. This problem will also not be solved, and will inevitably be discussed, mulled over, compared to other people's problems, and or problems she saw on daytime TV, and round and round you go.
2. If your decision is that you want to hit the gig with your band, then you need to immediately start listing out some appetizing compromises. This may or may not include cleaning the house, pulling off some kind of super dad feet (if kids are involved), volunteering for charity, a ballet, some boring-ass artsy play, manual labor, or in-laws. At this point you need to check yourself, and ask yourself if it's worth it. If the answer is 'no' then go back to step 1. If the answer is yes, that proceed to step 3.
3. Dramatic presentations grow legs. In other words, your wife may be the type to put her foot down. Even if she's smart, and can see where this is going from a mile away, do it anyway. Involve candles, flowers, perhaps draw a bath with a glass of wine and take your seat on the toilet lid in order to propose your plan.
4. Propose a plan that still involves you showing up somehow to the other plan. Perhaps start your evening with her and her friends and then duck out 'regrettably' for 'work'. Or vice versa if it's an early gig. Show up a little late. This might involve some sacrifices, like no drinks at your gig, no participating in any 'show your boobs' games or stuff like that.
5. Even if you work it all out and you get a green light, be prepared for her to change her mind and punish you for not reading her mind and 'knowing' the right choice. Make sure you are comfortable sleeping on the couch. Personally, I love my couch. I'm just as fine sleeping there as my bed as far as comfort goes.
My two cents
