There are still deals to be had if one is not stuck on the same old brands.
Started in the 70's and stopped when I bought my Sire about 6 months ago. Wait....there's another one I like! (comes out of bass purchasing retirement.....again)
I custom ordered a Marusczyk that I've had around ~18 months, just checked and the same spec instrument would easily be 20% more today. I think it'd still be a bargain at that price, but I'm glad I ordered it when I did. Swings and roundabouts though, I'm sure if I ordered it 18 months before I did it would have been cheaper again.
I'm happy with the basses I have, thankfully. Although I am getting tempted to get a 5 string - no need for it, just GAS manifesting in different ways now I'm happy with my basses, my amp, my cabs and my pedals, I'm sure

In the ten months I waited for a G&L LB-100 ordered in March 2022, the price for a new order of my specs rose $1,000. So, yeah, glad

Today’s prices on everything are crazy. It’s not just the bass. Live long enough and life itself becomes expensive.
I still buy, but only if the bass is really pretty and it is a great deal.
I’m the antitheses of a hoarder. I’ve never had more than 2 basses at a time and have bought exactly 3 basses since 1974. The last one bought 9 years ago when I had to have a 5 string for a corporate event/wedding band.
The imports are worth looking at too. I played a Squier 40th Anniversary Jazz recently and was amazed how nice it was. The import Stingrays are impressive too.
I saved a ton of money buying an MTD Kingston Super 4 instead of a USA Musicman or *GASP!* a USA MTD.
My P and J are all I need right now. I'm focusing on other aspect of music such as singing while I play, or just learning to play a bunch of songs. My first few years was about chasing instruments. It got tiring honestly and I wasted a bit of money unnecessarily. Should have stuck with my first bass and just played (Yamaha BB434).
I recently got lucky and scored a steal of a deal on a Yamaha BB435. A new one lists for $799 CAD up here in Canada. My local Yamaha dealer happened to have an old stock but otherwise still brand new 2017 BB435 for $399 CAD ($295 USD).

Got to go to the post office today and pick up a bass I recently purchased.
Another one is coming from across the pond. Was watching both for a while and prices kept coming down.
When I was comfortable with the price I jumped and purchased. Only problem is that sometimes someone else has a lower price threshold and will buy it out from under you.
Buying used is key IMHO YMMV.
When buying new, wait for sales. There were a bunch of Memorial Day sales.
July 4th sales are coming up.

We certainly have not seen the end of retail price increases. The firm I work for is a Yamaha dealer. We are expecting a 10% price increase across-the-board on July 1st.
But I think there are still deals to be had, especially in the used market. We are awash in used instruments and will be for some time.

Glad I don’t earn the same rate as 2,000.
I feel bad for hamburger flippers still living in their parents basement’s. But maybe the parents are making it worse by enabling them? Not sure.
Just glad I have a great career that pays well, though I’ve worked very hard to be where I am today.
