Mark Adams...bassist for "Slave"

Well...mine did. Not all flats on PBass are thump city. First Brothers Johnson album....Louis played a PBass. I seem to remember that on the cover, he had a natural PBass w/maple neck and white pickguard. All those songs sounded like PBasses. If you listen to "Get the Funk Outta My Face" my PBass sounded just like that. Pretty close to Slide....

I really need to get another PBass...But my Jazz has the 70's spacing (early 80s) with maple board and heavy as hell, I think it would be pretty close to what he's playing. My Lak DJ have the 60s spacing, sounds great, but to me, not really Mark Adams. My Alembic Series II (Mark had a Series I) can and do have Jazz(ish) tones, especially when played with a pick. But when plucking, that's where I think the difference is. On "Just a Touch..." his plucks have a distinct bell like tone, that are Alembic Series tone. Especially, for those days. Well, it does also sound like he may be using a chorus or very light flange.

We need to find him and ask him! I've got a couple other questions for him, too.

Well.....I have to disagree. But if we find Mark we can ask:) When I saw Slave live he played the Alembic. As for Louis, I He might have taken album cover pictures with a bass he didn't use just for the photo shoot (lots of people did that)

Well, as far as Louis, what bass do you "hear" on their first album? I "hear" a Precision.

I wouldn't doubt Luis played a P-Bass but Mark Adams? Nah! Anyone who plays an Alembic ain't tryin' to hear anything as dull sounding as a P-Bass! I mean geez, his Jazz had 3 pickups! He was onto something! Listen to any Slave song! The bass is on top of everything else!

Mr Mark Adams had a big influence on me.. I still use lots and slides and slurs in my playing thanks to him. But let us not forget Raymond Jackson, the bassist for "Aurra" and later "Mtume".. Funky dude... Listen to him on "PrimeTime" off of Mtume's "You, Me, & He" album. Awesome Bass.

Louis Johnson played a Precision on the first album. You have to note back then professional bass players were getting battery powered opamp based preamps installed in their basses. The preamps were custom made for the sound the bass player wanted. that can drastically change the tone of the instrument. Nate Watts and Byron Miller had them installed and I wouldn't doubt if Mark had one too

That was not a fender Jazz. His three pickup J bass was made by Stars Guitars with a Starts Guitars pre amp in it..

Here's a pic of Mark WITH what looks to be the bass in question.
This is the back of the 1987 album "Make Believe", which while I love them, was not their best work. It had pretty much started to go south by this point anyway.
S/N: On this album he was "Kid Hansolar" on the "Woo-Woo Boom-Boom Sting Bass" and the "Mirror Dance Bass".
