No matter what he did in the context of the music,he did stay true to the Groove.

That was Buddy Hankerson who played bass on that track. That was right after Steve Arrington left the band and the tune appears on his "Hall of Fame" debut album. Buddy was the bass player for Aurra when Steve Washington formed that gropu so many of Aurra's hits should be credited to Buddy as well as Steve. Buddy Hankerson Link Removed has his own band and still plays that song in his show, so does Slave.

I believe Mark told me that he took his slides from Bootsy and more so Verdine White who would "stab" the note in a very punchy and similar manner. I, personally took my slides from Bootsy, especially when I first head Parliament's 'Sir Nose D Voidoffunk' on the Funkentelchy album. I've never head someone who can create countless rhythmic variations of the simple slide as did Boot on that album. Even the other tracks has some great slippery stuff and when you hear Bernie Worrell play Moog on 'Flashlight' you can figure where he got his inspiration to slide the Moog on the breakdown in the middle of that track.

Mark is one of the reasons I ever picked up a bass! I remember I could not wait for their next album to come out, I would buy it without even hearing it! dang man....as a matter of fact, I listen to some of his stuff now, watchin you, just a touch,:hyper: :hyper: I would love to get a hold of party lites.........any pics of mark?? anybody???raise up!!!!!

I hope you guys don't mind to stop and educate a newbie; please define double stop.

Mark's slides don't seem to be a light touch, I mean you can hear his finger glide over the frets, he must really hit 'em hard. Yes?

I got an old bass I just took out of the for sale section, because its the closest one I have to Mark's sound, a really growly , clicky J. ( plus, you know, po' boy basses don't sell well around here in the zone of GAS)

Its playing at least two notes at the same time, try playing the D and G notes at the 12th frett together, and slide up 1/2 step, while pressing down on both notes at the same time, its like you playing fouths at the same time, or you can try 5ths, or 3rds, or D and G# together. I am sure otheres will chime in, and I hope I did A half butt job explaining it:hmm:

Got it. Why call it a double stop??

Whatyya y'all call that "stop" in Stellar Fungk , he plays the line ending with a short one measure walk back into the line, repeats the line and then at the end of the line just hits a chord and rests. No short riff, just a "baap" and rest. Sorry I don't know the terms; I'm like a Russian trying to commuinicate this.,.. worse I imagine./..

That's funny! I took my slides from Bootsy as well, but from "Rumpofsteelskin". Btw, Bernie said that he started out playing synth bass by accident. He and Boosty were in the studio, and Bootsy was warming up, so he decided to copy everything Bootsy did. George came running into the room screaming, "That's it!". Bernie didn't want to do it, because he felt that Bootsy was the end all, but Bootsy convinced him to do it, and he got behind the drums.

That's how I imagined it happened. There should also be kudos to Stevie Wonder for the slips and slides he does as well as his ghost notes. "Boogie on Reggae Woman" comes to mind for a complete study on slides (intro) and the overabundance (or overuse depending on how you see it) of ghost notes. I recall someone saying that you should never use too many ghost notes in a groove, but Stevie blew that rule totally out of the water. Now I wonder where stevie got his influence for and I heard him say Jamerson was his main one, but James was not as slippery as Stevie, more staccato and bouncy but definately groove as groove can be.

I don't hink he is quite back in the mix yet. I just got word that they are playing in Dallas 6/3 and I may have to miss that date. I have a week long gig in Chicago so they may have to use a sub for me. I'm trying to call Drac as I type to find out who they are going to have on bass, else I may have to give up my gig to help support the funk.

Buffalo... In FEBRUARY..... dreamin.....

It's not just the bass, as a kid weaned on Geez, Schecter ( G Funk Red album and Sabbath's Witch were my first completly learned albums ) and then a steady diet of blues and blues rock, but all " GI-TRr" music ( only steady well paying gig was cw/rockabilly ) to hear a tune like ( suck at names ) " We Want to Party With You ", I am FLOORED.....

The brass arrangement is AWESOME.... man, I'd SLAVE a 4 hour gig FOR FREE, just to play ONE tune where the brass follows me down to the bottom...sheesh... that sh..tz HOT!!

Can't get it out my head. One tune a night would satiate this burning desire man....

So B Slave, Man, make sure you tell Mark how cool it is that he is STILL turning people on to old REAL Funk. An amBASSador of Funk, if you will.

I'm just starting to feel it man.... Anthony said it take s the feel....and can see how years is the right time frame..
Its raw constrained energy, warm and good, yet solid steel and confident......

Not trying to revive the thread for too much longer, but I did have a long standing question on Mark's technique. When he does the slide, sometimes he'll go up, stop and do a vibrato of sorts??:help:
Is he "bending"(:help: again!!) the string to get that OR is he doing a hammer on on the next fret up from where he stops OR just going back and forth rapidly with one finger between the frets where he stops the slide?
For examples, he does just before the verse in "Feel My Love" and a lot in "Slide"....
It sounds to me like he's bending the string, but the life of me, I can't get that sound when I try....:bawl:
