Mark Adams ( Stone Jam aka Grung Funk !!

I don't think he's bending the string. He's doing what I call a 'trill'! When he slides up to the high note, he's simply sliding his hand back and forth between frets very fast! Kinda like a 'shaking the dice' like motion.

That's how Stu Zender does it. The quick triple hammer on is much easier. Then again, it's really a matter of tastes.

He uses vibrato. A little rapid and agressive. The kind that spans two or more frets using the same finger you slide up with.

My pinkie is getting a real workout! It needs it from being tweaked with "fulll on" left jabs on the hvy bag.. anyway.. going down in fifths....3/4 fingers.... hit the note and then vibrato sharp...takes a neat touch.. light in the hand/neck, heavy on the finger/board... thnx AGAIN.... DW...SB....guys......getting a little "Boosty trill" in the mix ...finally.,.. I just wanna know *** was I in the 70's and 80's??? Another frickin' planet it must been. Missed all the best bassists..... crap, coulda had funky fingers all along....

Thing is, most of this stuff wasn't played on the radio and if you weren't familiar with these artists, you'd never know they existed! Many had a huge following even without radio play and that's what sustained them for many years! Funk was huge in the 70's! I'm glad I was there throughout from the beginning! The bassists back then were all amazing musicians! It's a shame those bands can't get record deals anymore!! The funk needs to be kept alive and I'm going to continue being the Funkfather until I can't play anymore!

The masses are definitely there and no matter how young or old one is,if it's Funky it will be felt that's the biggest aspect of Funk,it just can't be denied.If it's out there the masses will come in droves but today the elements for the Funk simply isn't there,Drummers can't hold a basic groove,Bass players don't know what a groove is and Funky rhythm and lead guitarist are non existent or very very close to extinction.Seriously no one can fake the spiritual feeling of Funk music.

Man, you are so right! In fact, in my band, the cats have a strong desire to play funk music and to play 'funky' in general but, sadly, they just don't have it!

It's really sad and pathetic at the same time and it's very rare to find a Drummer or Bass player under 30 years of age that can actually bring the Funk especially when they profess to play Funk.I remember me and George Clinton were standing together talking to some friends less than 3ft behind a young Bass player(who looked to be between 19-22)and this young kid happen to look behind and spots George and about fainted and he's goes off into the most pathetic rendition of what he thought was a Funk groove I had ever heard(and he turns the volume up)and George didn't even blink or acknowledge that the guy was even playing(and he was looking up at George for his approval).

Unless you look into the urban Gospel field! There's some bad@$$ cats layin' it down! Other than that, it is truly a sad thing to see a genre like funk die a slow death! At least Prince (again, an older cat) is doing his part! Hopefully some young cats who recognize the importance of The Funk and start forming funk bands again.

Na! We ain't ending this on a negative note....I'm trying my doggonest to get this feel, might be some time yet but...we CAN"T let it die.

Com'on now, ***, I have always been a somewhat criitical listener of all genres of music ( most all), and this stuff's got it, I mean really got it, the ability to be emotive, to resonate inside.. I am once again astonished at mass appeal, or in this case lack therof...

Geez gents, Jauqo, DW, least I know what direction to take, like usual, the one least taken....funny how a Path you take can lead you off in an unforseen direction as you satisfy a thirst... ironic that the name of the original rock and roll band I play in is The Path....not neccesarily a great showcase for funk...although drummer and I, when given some free reign in a song ( we don't write - only "arrange and embellish"), we end up going funky.. but its a glimpse of a groove.....couple of 40 yr old white professionals in a pimple on a rat's ass part time original rock and roll band... not what I'd consider able ambassadors of funk,

but FUNK IT - it is what it is....... we do our little part...

Gotta think big man.... like an NFL linkup/JV or something... FUNK-IN' FOOTBALL and have a great FUNK band do halftime shows. Huge brass sections and all.... given the fact that most half time shows SUCK..... stuff like that.... but in anything like that..... branding the FUNK is key.... packaging it so folk understand it and get it without thinking about it too much....

Branding the Funk.... off on a tangent now, but, if y'all allow me this indiscretion.... to run Mark's thread out....

Can you DW, Jauqo, S Bass, put in words the essence of the Funky Feel ??

( I get a JOLT of the feel now and again so little that I DON"T want to try and define it and explain , just FEEL IT intuitively... again and again....MORE AND MORE...... like muscle memory in athletics....can't talk of it yet...)

And if anyone can link to a printable "discology of required funk listening", that'd be boss man...
