Mark Hoppus Tone???

I don't think we should be bashing his tone
Some people like it, some don't that's that.

They aren't trying to portray a perfectly tight perfect band
They're out there having fun (they were out there)

People enjoy that in a band
Different tastes

I grew up listening to Blink so I do have some sentiment for the band (although my tastes in music changed ALONG time ago).

I remember when I went to the Reading Festival last year that Tom D's new band, "Angels and Airwaves" did a mediocre performance and he came across as a complete and utter tw*t with an insanely large ego.

On a side note, Mark Hoppus' tone:

Pbass, valve head, new roundwounds and a pick pretty much.

Yeah, depending on which album/song you're looking at, it's either EBMM Stingray, Fender Jazz or P-bass, or his signatures (Jazz body, P-bass electronics) into Ampeg heads and 8x10s, new strings, pick.

Oh, and a long strap to sling it low around your knees, and wailing on those strings while dancing around and having a good ass time.

I very rarely come out a criticize a players tone, because even though some are really far from what I like, I can at least understand why others would like it.

But in this case, I really don't understand. His tone is muddy and indistinct, on record but especially in the clip posted by the OP. I think there are players in similar sounding bands with tones much more worth emulating.

IMO this is a better example of his bass tone. Precision bass through an Ampeg SVT with a pick. Nice overdriven tone IMO. Too many haters on Talkbass :D The performance on the first video was incredibly sloppy because they played too fast.

Sorry, still not really anything to write home about. Of course, it's hard to hear your bass when it's quieter than the guitarist and all you're really doing is playing root notes.

Let's all call Mark Hoppus trash because he doesn't play jazz like everybody else on TB! Yeah!!!

chill out guys, so what if it's not your thing, you dont need to come in here and talk trash about him. If you don't have anything to add to the conversation, just stay out of it.

That's not it at all. People here just get irritated when others think that a certain bassist is God because he/she/it happens to sing at the same time they're half-assing the muddy-sounding bass that you can barely hear. It goes to say a lot why people don't get nearly as irritated when Geddy Lee, John Entwistle, or Jack Bruce are praised. Firstly, they have an awesome, cutting tone coming out of their rig, they can play extremely well, and they can sing like it's nobody's business.
