Mark Knopfler Guitar anyone??

Nah, I’m not one to fetishize ‘celebrity’ owned gear, and if he got that Les Paul from Bobby Tench, I wonder what the odds are that Tench got it from Jeff Beck. That would be far more impressive. Knopfler never really did much for me; in that style of guitar playing, Richard Thompson is far more astounding.

Yeah, I saw it the other day. But why would a very successful, renowned and I suppose affluent musician, a rock star, auction his beloved guitars? It has a sad ring to me.
Here’s your answer…

Knopfler was estimated to have a fortune of £75 million in the Sunday Times Rich List of 2018, making him one of the 40 wealthiest people in the British music industry.

In November 2023, it was announced that Mark Knopfler was set to auction over 120 guitars and amplifiers, including the 1983 Les Paul used for hits like "Money For Nothing" and "Brothers In Arms." Proceeds from the auction, said to be held at Christie's in London in January 2024, will contribute 25% to charity. Knopfler expressed his desire for the instruments to find loving homes and hopes they will be played rather than stored away.

Because he isn't playing them much anymore (and some is going to charity). Also, I imagine this way he can detail every guitar, both to maximize returns, and so the buyer knows what they are getting.

I notice every instrument seems in very good condition. See, you can play them hard for years without beating them to @#^$@!.
