Markbass Megathread PART 2

I just purchased the mark bass mini112 combo amp and now I want to add a cabinet. At first try at GC I pluged in the traveler 2-10 and it sounded ok. If I buy it my rig for small to medium gigs will be the combo amp and the 2-10 cab which makes for 1 12 inch speaker in the combo and 2-10's in the ext cab. Is this the smart thing to purchase? I'm after a big on stage sound because we go through the PA most the time anyway. The Epifani 1-12 cab gets great reviews here...Should that maybe be the cab i add to my combo amp?

I'd get a good small 1-15. A Bag End S-15D for example.

ohhhh, i just got that LMII in the classifieds after gassing for a good year. i borrowed one for a gig sometime last fall and was blown away, needless to say ive been dreaming markbass ever since, and cursing everytime i see someone else talk about theirs. i cant wait to join the illustirous ranks of the markbass owners..

I've been using my mini112 combo on top of my Epi UL112.
I didn't really expect too much, in my opinion its a weird
match up. I was knocked out by the sound! The guys around
me seem to like it too. The combo head alone sounds very
good through the UL112 as well.

You probably don't mess with the EQ much during a gig though right? I'm one of those people, I set it at the start and leave it (with the LM-II that's normally flat with a little treble cut). I'm wondering if there's any point to flipping it if I don't tend to mess with the EQ...

I haven't done it yet, but I plan on it. I don't want any EQ in my signal going to the sound board. I'll give the sound guy a completely clean signal, and he can adjust it as he sees fit.

You're right... I set mine before I leave home;). All flat, filters off. Sounds great.

While I virtually never touch my EQ on the gig either, and run the LMII reasonably flat with my Epi cabs, it's still a good idea to do that very, very simple modification and set the DI to pre IF you are primarily going to use the DI in a live setting versus recording.

Even if it doesn't sound that much different, most soundmen/women have a real problem with post EQ DI's, and IME, the first question from many of them when you ask to use your amps DI is 'is it pre 'everthing':D

It's just a safer bet to make the swap IMO.

No, as you know, that 1212L is quite low mid voiced. However, as you've found out, the EQ center points and filters on the LMII match wonderfully with that cab IMO and IME.

My typical setting with my J type basses is:

Bass... boost a touch... 1 o'clock at most
Low mids... cut a touch.. around 11 o'clock
Upper mids... boost just a touch
Treble... flat
VLE.... at about 9 o'clock, with the tweeter on the 1212L around 9 o'clock also
Pre Shape.... between 8 and 10 o'clock, depending on the particular bass and room.

That really widens the tone of the 1212L (shifting the lows from the low mids to more of an even, wider low end typical of a larger cab) while keeping the punch. It sounds great to me!

+1... this is very instrument specific. If you have big old humbucker soapbars, like the 55-02 or the Roscoe.. you surely wouldn't need to boost the low end on the LMII, even with the 1212L. The LMII EQ above is with the tone controls on the bass set 'flat', or in the case of the Sadowsky and Alleva J, with the low end boosted just a small amount (maybe 10%).

Thanks Ken! I am currently at the default setting (600Hz) with my 55-02. I either have to cut the bass on the 55-02 or on the LMII just a tad in either instance. Sometimes the low mids too. It will get plenty loud though.
