Markbass Megathread PART 2

Yu know...it's pretty crappy when I have to defend myself for VOICING MY OPINIOn ..but here goes:

Go to my prior posts...I never , ever stated the LMII was bad. I own one. One of my numerous posts stated the LMII sounds great with my Epifani 2 x 12 cab. IMO the LMII blew away the Epi with that cabinet.

Hype.........I didn't say the bass was all hype...what I said was it will take years to see if this product was/ is the real McCoy or all hype.

By now I'd guess you realize that you did indeed say the amp is all hype. You appeared to think that you were agreeing with Joey Squid, who said the amps are too cheap to last long.

Posts 561 and 562.

A year from know we could all be raving about a new bass amp that folds up like an Ipod! (I wish!)

I'm entitled to my opinion. There is no right or wrong as we all have different opinions on things.

I never, ever called the LMII cheap.

You're right, Joey Squid did. Not that there's anything wrong with that. AAnd there shouldn't be anything wrong with people not agreeing with him. That's what makes the "Yu know...it's pretty crappy when I have to defend myself for VOICING MY OPINIOn..." thing so odd. What's so crappy about people not agreeing with you on an issue you apparently are allowed to disagree with them on?

The fact that you're adamant about not saying something that is quite easily found is kind of odd too.

You don't have to defend your opinion... you think it's a great amp for the money that's all hype. Cool. Normally those two positions would seem to be at odds with each other.

Several people don't completely agree with you.
:D

If I was in the market for a new head, would I purchase the 502 or LMII. It depends....how am I financially, what am I using the amp for, huge venues, small clubs, coffee houses, etc. There are allot of factors.

I also beleive I stated...for the money this head can't be beat.

And I have no idea what this troll thing is thqt a few of you are mentioning.
I'm my own man......just because I may not agree with the majority does not make MY OPINION OR YOUR OPINION LESS VALUABLE.

"nUFF SAID.
I've been playing for over 25 years.

At this point it's not even clear what your actual opinion is. You're denying you said something you said. I'm just pointing that out.

No big deal, but I think it's just 'cause you've said the amp is "all hype" in two different threads now, so it seems to be kind of a soapbox thing, and when it's a negative thing like this, folks tend to push back a bit.

At least for me, if something really is all hype, then it's no meat/potatoes... no genuine worth... without the "buzz", it's literally nothing... likely not even worth evaluating.

IMHO, even if you don't like everything about the LMII (which DOES include me), I really don't think the MB stuff deserves that classification. Seems to me it's proved its mettle pretty respectably.

FWIW, anyway.

That was my take on the word "hype" too... not really up to the standards people attibute to it. Undue praise.

From the other thread:

"After owning the MB LMII for a month...........the more you work with..the more limitations you will realize.........I'm not sure it worth all the hype.
It will take a year or so to really see how these amps hold up.................will they be solid performers like the 502, or get tossed out of the ring like the old GK400.....the GK was a great sounding head also.....but wasn't road worthy".

Again, I've had mine a year. Still haven't run into any limitations as a primary head on my gigs.
:D

I guess I shouldn't write posts when I'm dead dog tired.....because then I have to write too many rebuttals! :p
I see your point...and it's a valid explanation.

FYI: My definition of "hype" is: generating public interest in a product before it's release. Like a CD release, etc.

In the Cleveland market (North Olmsted) the MB just came out a month ago, even though the Cincy market had it well before the August 2007 date that I purchased my LMII.
I should have stated that looking at the posts. Maybe creating a "buzz" would have been a better phrase to use. ;)

Again, different strokes for different folks. I guess what I question on ANY amp is the durability. I can't afford to throw money away on a product that doesn't warrant the price. I don't think any of us can. that's why forums like this are great IMO.

OK, let's talk bass! :bassist: :D

Yup Ive seen all the SD800 threads. Posted in a few aswell. Just thought Id ask Brad or Vic if they had any experience with this paticular head..as I dont remember if they have. Mostly LMII stuff in this thread so Id thought I try and change it up a bit:)

Ok, just checking. :D

Brad or Vic.. I was wondering if guys had ever tried out the SD800?
If so what were your impressions. FWIW I feel its the best product from MB.
Yep, I have. My impressions mimic Ken's pretty much, which is typical (tho not guaranteed ;) :D).

I prefer the tone of the SA series as a general rule, but the SD can also sound great depending on what cab you're using. In other words, I just think it's more about the mix/match with the SD than the SA.

I'm not really drawn to the SD 'cause it's a lot of money and I already have a "big rig", that I like the tone of more, have no complaints with, is a lot more flexible regarding loads (which is a necessity for me right now), and actually cost less overall.

In short, even if I liked the tone of the SD more, it still wouldn't really be an option for me in my current situation.

Thanks Vic,

I use the SD800 for everything I do, from big gigs to backyard parties to little coffee shops and open mics. Mostly cuz I spent all my hard earned on this one head , but in doing that it actually helps me learn all the nuances and how to EQ properly for certain rooms, stages, etc. Its my do it all.. but I do agree with you on the load issue. Why doesnt MB offer 2 ohms? Id kick some serious bootay if my amp would drop to 2.

For me, it's even sillier. It's not so much that I'd need any more power than that... heck no... the "problem" is I just need to drive a third speaker in the current band. This band REALLY emphasizes "thump", so having a lot of bass and bass drum both on stage as well as in the mix, is focal. As such, the pre/pwr thing works really well, and either my Xti or my World 2.1 are very light, so it's not a problem. I can drive pretty much any mix of cabs I want, and have individual control over 2-3 bass "zones" on stage. Yeah, I'm a nerd about it, but it's fun, it works well, and they really like it. :)

Note, we run a fairly conservative PA config, so there's no "room" for bass in the monitors, which is pretty much just vox, which is another reason my rig has to sort of cover that. We push dual 2x18 subs plus tops, but only vox monitors. Quick to set up, but it does have its limitations as noted. :)

No problem, Kev:D

I agree, "buzz" probably would be a better word. I don't recall anyone talking about how great the amp was prir to actually hearing one. I personally equate "hype" with "bs"... because hype usually has a high content of the latter. I didn't say anything nice about my amp until it had proven itself on gigs where other amps didn't perform as well.

If anything I'd tell people to consider the source. I myself don't change amps frequently. There has to be a reason for me to make a change. I think many bassists are like that, particularly those who get paid to play and going after the next big thing really effects the bottom line.

Yeah, Kevin Brubaker has one. I stopped by the shop yesterday and played a few basses though it again.

If I needed to play EXTREMELY loud, I'd consider it. Kevin on ocassion has that need and he loves it. He replaced an Eden Navigator/QSC 3402 (?) setup with it and has never been happier. The funny thing is that he has it in a rack with his old setup, which he's been carrying (the old setup) "just in case" for several months now. So far the need to use it hasn't arisen.

It worked fine for me but I've never taken it on a gig. For me the price (double my LMII) and performance isn't warranted... my LMII continues to coast through my gigs. All of them.

Id love to play "zone" on stage. Never thought much about using power amps before... in my ignorance I thought power amps were mostly for PA stuff. Now I know better. Oh yea, when the bass drum is micd, is it going through those 18s too or just the vocals?

Ive had my SD since Jan 07 and so far I havent had any problems .. I dont even carry a backup anymore:hiding: Markbass hasnt had many problems with thier products breaking down thus far..maybe still to early to tell but so far so good IMO.. though I did just read about a LMII breaking..:hmm: I really hope that thier warranty/customer service is as good as thier product(s)

The dual 2x18's are the subs for the PA, not my bass rig, as it sounds like you might be thinking, so yeah, it's going through them, but not my rig. We tend to crank the subs when we play, so he has no problem feeling his kick.

Ya I knew the subs were for the PA only not your rig.. Just wondering what went through the 18s.. But back to your rig for a second..Do u need a power amp to have a multiple amps on stage, and where do u set your amps at? Im guessing one behind or near the drum kit is a nice place to start.
