Markbass Megathread PART 2

I've got an LMII and Traveler 102P which I use in full band/studio situations and have started doing small "acoustic-type" gigs too.
I know the 102P is light, but something smaller to take on public transport would be great...
Rather than get a really small combo, what fairly cheap, small, light single-driver cab would anyone recommend? (Actually, a Traveler 1 x 10 cab - if it existed - would be perfect, but probably wouldn't be half the price of a 102P!)
Cant think of a louder lighter cab than the schroeder mini 12 Light. 22LBS 400w

Update on my LMII repait. My LMII arrived at my doorstep via UPS today, back from the repair shop. I tested it and it sounds perfect. As good as new! No charge for shipping or repair. GC did right by me and I have to say I am quite pleased. It took a little while to get the process started since mine was one of the first to go through the warranty process, but once the ball got rolling, everything went very smooth. The tech at the repair facility called me to discuss the amp issues, and as it turns out, he's a bass player in a really hot band. He then called once the amp was repaired to let me know it was finished and that it was on its way back home. I am thrilled to have my LMII back. :hyper: Woohoo! Gary

Send a PM to TBer Peter Murray, he's in promotion/marketing for Markbass. Here's his profile:

That's exactly what I did and Peter pm'ed me back within hours. I did a lot of searching and reading here before I bought my LM II and seeing Peter's participation on TB was definitely a plus for Markbass when I made my buying decision. I love it when company reps participate in forums like TB. I think it demonstrates a high level of commitment to providing excellent service to your customers.

Anyway, I'd like to add a +1 to KJung's LM III wish list. Most important feature I'd like to see on the next generation LM would be an improved DI. I've only tried mine once and it was fine, but I would like to see a pre/post switch and level control. I have a Sadowsky pre/di pedal I can use as a di and for the mute switch, but it would be cool to have it integrated into the head.

Do a lot of people use the XLR input? I don't really mind it, but I don't see myself using it much.

That sounds just the ticket, but over here in the UK, Schroeder cabs are very pricey and the main stockist doesn't seem to do the Mini 12 Light...I may shoot them an email, but I'm sure the price will be over my budget...Same story with Bergatino & Epi in terms of price...:crying:

Does anyone know of a good Schroeder stockist in the States? I might be tempted to get one shipped, seeing as they're so light...

Does musicians friend ship to the UK? If not, you might want to try the guys at www.basscentral.com

I STILL have not had a single soundperson complain about the DI in my LMII. We play a lot of places with independent soundpeople and not one complaint yet.

Cool! I have also not run into any problems with my SD800 either. However, enough have, and with Figuredbass's analysis, it does seem that under very specific situations, there can be some low end attenuation of the tone. Seems like a very easy fix for the Markbass guys to do on either future production runs or product updates.

I believe the 'distortion' posts by one or two TBers was user error (mic versus line input setting on the board).

I have not tried the Mini 12L, but the new EA Wizzy 10 weighs 16 lbs, and is extremely loud for its size (and sounds great!). From what I recall of my Mini 12+ (the ceramic, not neo version) when I had it, the Wizzy 10 seems at least as loud. :bassist: :bassist: :bassist:

If I remember correctly, you had the original 'side baffle' mounted 12 model... IMO not a good thing.

The new model Mini 12+L is quite a bit louder, and while still quite mid rangey, it's pretty clear and wonderfully punchy.... much improved IMO over the original. Add in the new tweeter and crossover, and it's quite a cool little package if you are into a somewhat 'Jaco' type punch tone.

From my experience with the Wizzy 12, that would line up closer in tone to the Mini 12 without the tweeter, although the Wizzy would extend the low end quite a bit... which can be a good or bad thing in a very small cab, depending on the volume you have to project.

I have not had the pleasure of trying the new Mini 10+ or the Wizzy 10.

Do you have an address of the repair shop ? I hear they are right in my area so I'm curious where? Maybe I can even go check out the bass player/techs band.

That's interesting... and a little surprising. I once did a quick A/B of a wizzy 112 & a Schroe mini 12L (no tweeter) and they sounded fairly similar to my "uneducated" ears. There were differences for sure, but because they are both 12s and relatively similar in size, they had some commonalities.

I find it quite surprising to hear that a wizzy 10 is as loud as a schroe mini 12L. The dimensions of the wizzy 10 are smaller and its a 10. Weird.

BTW, of the two, I'd give the edge to the wizzy 12 in terms of tone preference.

The M-line and regular Wizzy's were both louder than my Mini 12+, but then again, that was an older version. The Wizzy 10 is not quite as 'big' sounding as the M-line Wizzy, but it's awfully darned close to as loud (with more upper mids, and less lows to low mids than the M-line). The Wizzy 10 is much smaller, though, and both the range and output just amaze me, considering its lilliputian dimensions.

And yes, tonally, the entire Wizzy line is a great blend of fullness, warmth, and clarity. There is no tweeter sparkle, but you can get an amazing (considering there is not tweeter) amount of high end detail out of them. I was playing my EBS HD350 (an amp that I associate with a sweet, clear high end) through Wizzy 10's and M-line Wizzy's the other day, and I was just floored with the very extended, clear high end, and nicely full lows. That HD350 really casts those Wizzy cabs in a different light, and I liked the combo.

LMII/F1 Mini Shootout!

I did a little GC trip during lunch today. They had an F1 in stock. I a/b'd it with the LMII there through the markbass 210 non-ported cab, and then an ampeg 4x10. The F1 is a very cool little head. It definitely sounded a bit quicker than the LMII, and maybe a touch tighter/punchier in the low end. The LMII sounded a little more edgy, with a little more growl to it, and less "open" sounding than the F1. I decided that the openess of my UL502 was one of my main complaints of my live tone getting a bit buried, due to my very open and pure sounding MTD 635. So, I picked up a brand new LMII. Now I need to decide if I want to keep the used one I got here in the classifieds as a backup, or just sell it and slim down to one amp. I'd imagine that I'm going to be selling the UL502 very soon, and I already have a buyer lined up for it.

cool! Seems like most of the data points line up on the LMII/F1 comparisons. Both great in their own way.

Yeah, I thought the F1 was pretty cool, but then I got into the hole deal of "is the UL502 worth $1000 more than the LMII based on tone alone?", and the same agrument can be said for the F1 compared to the LMII. The F1 didn't really seem to offer me much more compared to the LMII. The tone was very similar between the two, but different as I described above. Is the F1 worth $250 more than the LMII? I'm not sure. I don't think it is to me.
