Markbass ? Why the dislike ?

i had a gig Sat. night and as we were wrapping up another band was starting in the bar next door, the incredible power of the bass notes got me curious and I went over to see what he had and he had mb cabs, i could not see the head but sheer amount of bass pressure blew my mind.......this made me log onto tb and i see this thread so for grins I went to GC yesterday...i played the Jeff Berlin combo and a guitar player actually came over to tell me how good it sounded, i thought it was good too, I did notice the VLE and the other thing were both dimed, I brought them all the way off which I assume is flat and worked from there, I liked it quite a bit. I also tried the tiny little 250 watt thing through a 4x10 and the amount of bass was just mind blowing, I actually dialed the bass back under 12 o'clock. Soundwise I would be curious to give it a shot and hear it in a band mix but seeing all the new pro gear on talkbass...i think the aesthetic of markbass is cartoonish, their marketing department IMO should go through a redesign...look at the new trickfish and how elegant it looks, look at the mesa and gk fusion designs, look at the post classic ampeg pf's..so instead of doubling down on the whole bumble bee thing, why not just make the drivers all black, maybe with the corner bumpers yellow or something as a nod to the past identity but make the asthetic appear more boutique.

I agree that they look a bit comical with the bright yellow on black thingy, and that they are expensive; but the watts/power and quality of sound in such a small, lightweight package was beyond my self control, I was compelled to own one. I've used a lot of equipment since the late 60s...a lot, but this is the first amp that stopped me in my tracks when I first heard it. Even more shocked when I saw what was producing the sound.

Since part of this thread is about the Mini CDM 121P (500W), could those of you who have one please check the power watts listed on your particular amp? You'll have to lay your amp on it's face to see underside of amp head, look on far right panel and find Power in middle of manufacturer's info. I bought mine assuming it was 500W, but the metal plate on the bottom of my amp says 600W. I've been curious about this for years...is it 500W or 600W?

I thought they were 600w @ 4 ohms (and 300w @ 8 ohms)?

The VLE and VPF are off when they are at zero / all the way CCW. The VPF does a mod scoop as you turn it up and the VLE rolls off more of the high end as you turn it up. Diming both would be like cutting mods and highs and cranking the bass.

I do have one more thing to add: I had a TC Electronics BG250 combo before this, and I thought it was amazing! Gods gift to the bass world- until I blew it up 3 times during the warranty year! They cheerfully fixed it all 3 times, taking a little more time than I would have liked, but still 3 TIMES!!!!

That was how I bought this combo to begin with, and the damn thing has been indestructable! It has gotten rained on, taken everywhere around town, dragged around on city busses, whatever, and has not failed ONCE!

All the original combos had the 500 watt amp...and all the heads..SA450 TA450 etc
the next line F500 and F1
LMII and LMIII are 500 watters

I've been playing an SD1200 into a fEarful 15/6 for about 6 years now. I chose that head over the LMIII, the LM800 and Shuttle 9. I sold my Mesa M6 when I got the SD1200 too. It just thumps -- loud and clear. I never run out of lows or low mids, and the sweepable mids are one of the greatest things I've ever had on an amp. Gigging volume is never more than about 10:00 each on the Gain and Master.

The head of the CMD121P is identical with the LMIII. Previous it was identical with the LMII. Just the top-plate is missing.
Both were always rated 300W at 8 ohm (inbuild speaker) and 500W at 4 ohm.
You confound the maximum power the power-supply draws from the power grid with the power that gets to the speakers. Your vacuum cleaner might be rated at 1200W, but it isn't (much) louder than the CMD121P.

Old analog amps often draw 2 to 3 times the current that they deliver to the speakers. Most of the power is just changed into heat, like with old lightbulbs. Class-D amps or in case of the older LMII analog amps with a digtial switched power supply are much more efficent.

After skimming through 11 pages of opinions... I thought there's no reason not to share mine too, so I will. :)

Several years ago, I got tired of needing help (as to not dent/scratch/scuff gear or doorways) lugging my SVT-CL in a roadcase & SVT-810 from house to car to stage to car to trailer to stage to etc.... so, I started looking at downsizing. Made the switch to an Ampeg 410HLF, which I still have & like, which helped shed some size/weight. Enter the Tech 21 VT Bass -- I got curious about running this pedal into one of the new, fancy, crazy-light amps. Went to a store plugged a LMT800 into a 410HLF & was sold within the first 30 seconds. Tiny. Light. Plenty of power. What's not to like. Gigged a LMT800 (with a VT Bass) into my 410HLF for quite some time. Zero issues.

Finally tried a CMD121P a few months ago & couldn't believe how much sound it put out, given it's size/weight. Started researching & came across a NY121 cab for my LMT800. I'll likely either grab a 2nd NY121 or a CMD121P to pair with it, depending on which ever I see first at a great used price. I think that MarkBass gear is great. It's very toneful and reliable. Period.

Now, about the colors -- no, I'm not a big fan. In fact, I've thought about putting a different grill on my lil cab so it loses that branded orange hue. Rat fur -- hate it. But, the size & weight more than make up for my lack of affection for rat fur. I'm sure it's much more forgiving in the long run than tolex; and likely a lot cheaper too... but, it still has a stigma of being cheap/old/undesirable for many buyers. Do I think some would enjoy a complete rework of their look/branding? YES. Do I think they've been on the market a long time and have a unique look that is QUICKLY identifiable? YES. Rebranding the look might or might not be the best move for the long term goals of the company.

Does it sounds like every other amp/cab? NO. Why should it? If G&K sounds different than Trace, SWR, Ampeg, Peavey, or Fender -- then why shouldn't Markbass have their own distinct/unique flavor too? It doesn't mean that it's inadequate in any way, it just means it's a different flavor. Different flavors are good.

SOLELY AVAILABLE AT GUITAR CENTER. No, I don't like that either. Sure, I've have good/bad experiences at GC like everyone else. The Music Instrument (M.I.) industry often refers to GC as the 800lb gorilla that very few mom & pop stores can legitimately compete with and there is a lot of negative connotations with this scenario. But, Markbass chose this. Their business decisions are theirs, not yours/ours. Their business, their decision.

I still like my Markbass gear, and I'll likely buy more in the not so distant future.

Marco is on record as saying they based the sound on an old fliptop ampeg. At the time i bought my combo,i owned one of those,(an sb12 actually),and can say they are very similar. (Only the MB has 500 watts instead of 35.) the 800 tube amp gets it even better. I sold the fliptop for almost what i paid for the markbass combo.

Can you provide a link/direction to where I can learn more about this?
