I much prefer a matching headstock, but it's not a dealbreaker if I don't have one. But every instrument I've ever built has a matching 'stock.

With a black body, dark fingerboard, and maple neck, it’s a must.

With a maple neck and maple fingerboard, though? Leave that thing alone.

I love them but they're by no means a deal breaker. My favourite basses don't have them but I wish they did.

My Geddy Jazz replica build. I think the matching headstock looks right for this build and I’ve gotten many complements on the color scheme as well.

I love them. They are classic mid-60’s Fender as far as I’m concerned.
Of course sunburst is kind of classic too.

They’re nearly always preferable for me. It often looks either cheap or like the neck was built by someone else when it doesn’t match. It’s especially noticeable on some Sadowskys or G&Ls that might have a fancy top like buckeye burl with a rosewood fretboard and then just a plain maple headstock that doesn’t match anything.
