Southern gospel pulled it off, probably because the matching beehive.More often than not they look classy instead of tacky, unlike the matching neon colored tuxes favored by many soul/disco groups of the '70's.

Frankenbass? I see different neck and body.
Matching headstocks only look good on instruments with a dark (for example, rosewood or ebony) fingerboard.Considering a bass project.. What is your opinion on matching headstocks? Please post a photo of same if you have one....Thanks
The headstock should absolutely match the body. Heastocks that do not match the body serve to remind of shortcuts taken to reduce cost.
Quite fond of this pair.

I can see the tinkering, swapping necks out aspect of why one needs a plain headstock instead of matching headstock. Good point, one I hadn't thought about.I don't know - I kind of like having a "generic" headstock for the purposes of swapping and tinkering. My '78 P-bass neck has been on 5 different bodies, now and my J-bass neck is on its second body.
With a matching headstock, I feel a bit constrained. The ones I've had have all been non-Fender-spec, so it's not like there's much out there to begin with if I need a new neck or I want to try a body with a different pickup configuration. But if I did, it would make the search exponentially more of a PITA.
I'm neutral on the look in many instances. (I do have to admit, though: it does look pretty badass to me sometimes on the Fenders.)
Thank you sir, it’s a matching body, neck and the headstockThat white Ray with the gold hardware is beautiful. I'm quite jealous!

That Ric is Bluetiful!!

For me, painted body no matching headstock; but exotic wood top then yes.
On dark wood fingerboards I prefer them. Both of mine happen to be black but I think it really looks good when the color is not black. The Dano is Pau Ferro. On maple fingerboards, it's a tossup. For me anyway.Considering a bass project.. What is your opinion on matching headstocks? Please post a photo of same if you have one....Thanks

I love them but they're by no means a deal breaker. My favourite basses don't have them but I wish they did.
Here are my basses and the 3 that have matching breadsticks are the Bongo 6 and the BFR Stingrays (green one and pink one):
