Love them with a dark fingerboard - wish Fender offered them more often. I also agree that all maple necks are best nude.

More often than not they look classy instead of tacky, unlike the matching neon colored tuxes favored by many soul/disco groups of the '70's.

Generally I like them but if you're going that route, make sure you consider the color of the decals as well. I love this bass but I've never been particularly enamored with the gold lettering on the red headstock. I'm not sure what color would look better. I just know the gold isn't working.

The headstock should absolutely match the body. Heastocks that do not match the body serve to remind of shortcuts taken to reduce cost.

I’ll say it. I hate them. HATE them. You could gift me a rare bass that was played by Jamerson... then by Jaco... and if it has a matching headstock I’d get rid of it before the end of the day.

I know this goes against the grain on this site... but on Fender-stye basses, I like natural headstocks. Matching headstocks on Fenders have always looked cheezy and kinda 80s to me for the most part. YMMV.

Totally different rules apply when it comes to high-dollar, thru-bodies with exotic woods! Those Alembics look great... and yeah, I'd expect those to have matching headstocks.

MTD recently posted a photo of a gorgeous bass with a black face on the headstock... very different for those guys, but it looked SWEET! Very Spector-ish!
