Material between top and body?

Hey TB,

I am planning a new build and am shopping for materials soon. I am thinking Mahogany body with redwood or possibly walnut top, ebony fingerboard and neck yet to be decided (maybe Wenge if I can find the right piece). I have seen in a lot of basses that there is a thin material laminated in between the body and the top, creating a thin line between the two. What do you use for this? I am probably looking for the line to be the same color as the ebony to tie the two together aesthetically. If I go with redwood I may want a different color though.

I did some searching but came up with nothing, so any advice is appreciated.

Its just wood veneer. For black accent lines I use Wenge veneer, its a lot cheaper than ebony veneer and more easily available.

In any ones opinion does it effect the veneer sound at all?
cause the line inbetween is wicked, but i just wondered if it adds anything else?

Hi,
I'm in the process of building a hippie sandwich 5 string, graphite neck.

for my lams, I've resawn padauk, bloodwood and purpleheart planks and surface sanded to desired thickness.
I'm using a mahogany core and will repeat the same lams for the back. Top and back are both flamed myrtlewood.

and no, I do not believe the lams make any tonal difference

no, veneers wont, only thicker slabs such as body core wood will have any dramatic effect on tone
