Lightning Bolt is fan-freakin-tastic! I saw them over the summer and it was easily the best thing I've ever witnessed. It was so loud and there was so much energy and this guy next to me got a nose bleed and this girl was on the ground crying, it was definitely a good time

Can I join? Big protest the hero fan. I really dig between the buried and me and dillenger as well. Been trying to get my bandmates to play in weird time signatures with me, but none of them can keep up. Wrote out something in 7/8 earlier.

I admit I haven't read this entire thread (yet.) I'm a big fan of a lot of the bands mentioned. Love Don Caballero!

But I wondered if anyone had mentioned the band Grails. Really cool band. Some of their stuff almost gets into some weird genre of metal, but the music is really expansive and just...I dunno...they got their own groove going on, and it's a good one.

Grails are an instrumental band for the most part, by the way...

I'd also lump in karnivool there too...

gcloon, welcome to talkbass (i see this is your 3rd post).

respectfully, i don't think you have too much in common with any of the other bands mentioned. this is not a dis on the band (the music is tight), i just think you might be mistaken about what bands in these genres sound like...

Caspian was impressive... I'd only heard their myspace. they had a heavy, shoegazer sound; very dynamic, everything is distorted and soaked in reverb. this made the drummer really stand out, and he slayed!
RS was everything that I hoped for- 5 musicians going for broke. I didn't know that they used a Fender Rhodes as well- very cool! Not all of the slide guitar comes from pedal steal either, sometimes it is the guitarists just playing w/ a slide. Their new stuff was more dynamic, which i like. they really had a lot of depth as a band- I dug it!

earlier in this thread, i wrote this short review of a post-rock/post-metal show i saw in denver... i fully retract any negative comments i made about fang island. i think their triumphant sounding, major-key songs were an odd pairing with the other two bands. i am totally hooked on them, their songs are both epic and fun (a weird combo). for the past two weeks, they've been in top rotation for me.

Fang Island is such a fantastic band. I saw them and it was definitely one of the most fun times I've had. It was egg-cell-ent.
