Mayones Cali 4. Delivered today.

Wow!! Just got this thing today, and I'm blown away. So easy to play, feels amazing, looks amazing, absolutely no complaints!! Had it delivered to my office, and working now, otherwise I don't think I'd be able to put it down!!

I got my Mayones Cali a few days ago, shipped straight from Gdansk. I like how it plays, but it has a massive problem: its atrocious shielding. I get ground noise when I let go of the strings, and using my wireless system causes it to hum loudly, especially in active mode (I got the Aguilar preamp). The only other instrument I own with this problem is an old Westone Pantera bass that has obvious shielding issues as well.

Does your Cali have shielding issues? I really wish mine didn't, since it ruins my plans to record with it.

As a soon-to-be Cali4 owner, I'm sorry to hear this. Some questions:
  1. Is it the new 2021 model with the headphone and full-sized sockets on the edge of the body?
  2. If yes to #1, is this happening with both amp circuits or just the main (full-sized) one?
I think my 2021 model will arrive in a bit over a week so I'll drop back in here to let you know if I can replicate your problem.

@MotorMind My Cali 4 arrived last week and I'm curious to know if we are experiencing the same issue.

It was sounding clean through my Bergantino Forté D in passive mode before I charged the battery (it was discharged on arrival). Now, after charging the battery I am getting a constant, high-pitched whine, irrespective as to whether the bass is active / passive or the headphone "preamp" is switched on or not.
  • Worst: Active + headphone off
  • Not so bad (but still not great): Passive + headphone on
Other passive / active basses through the same amp with the same settings and lead aren't generating the same whine so it's isolated to the Cali 4.

I've raised it with the retailer (the excellent Alain from Sebastopol Music) and I've had good interactions with Mayones in the past so I'm hopeful of a constructive response. I'll post a summary of what I hear back.

Further clarifications of my previous post:
  • Worst: Active + headphone switch down (off)*
  • Not as bad (but still not great): Passive + headphone switch up (on)*
*Note: The blue "Preamp" LED lights up whenever a 1/4" jack is inserted and neither the headphone amp switch position nor the passive / active pull-push position affects it. Unsure whether that's by design but it doesn't seem to have much utility apart from indicating (invisibly, while you have the bass next to you) that a jack is inserted.

The whine coming through the amp is a louder version of the same (albeit much quieter and tolerable) whine I hear through my 80 ohm Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro headphones when they are connected to the bass.

I know this is an old thread, but did you ever get the whine noise resolved? I'm waiting to find the finish and color of my dreams, and then I will pull the plug on one of these. Can't wait! But will wait!!
And OP -- you still like yours?

I posted this in the Mayones group too, but this was delivered just in time for vacation! Plug in the headphones and walk to your heart's delight!! Very meditative.
This instrument is built to perfection. The neck is sweet and the look is killer! It sounds great and plays great. It it not a full-size bass, but it enables the bass player to "keep thinking bass" wherever they may be. If I sound happy, it's because I am!
Happy travels!
