McCartney's Tribute to Lennon on SNL

The vocals were dry and the mix was kind of strange but I didn't think it sucked. I was happy to see that it was a decent rig and was miced instead of DIed.

It wasn't a perfect mix, but I wouldn't say that it sucked. I agree that the vocals were a bit dry, but I still enjoyed it.

I was surprised that they did 4 performance segments instead of the usual 2 and it was also cool to see 3 bass rigs on stage (Mesa Boogie, Vox and Ashdown).

Strange. For me (and my wife) the mix was so bad, and what one could hear of the vocals so dry, that we bailed 30 seconds into the second song once we verified that it was just as hosed as the first. I know it's not my stereo, and it's hard to envision how Verizon could get a different mix from other providers.
I also can't imagine that the rest of you could have such low standards, so I guess it'll have to remain a mystery, for now.

I saw it. I thought the mixes were a bit off and Mac's vocals shaky sometimes but relieved that it showed it was live performance as far as the vocals. I too noticed the 3 bass rigs. ??? Figured they were part of his endorsement deals. Mostly suspect was Mac's bass playing in the first two tunes. Didn't look like he was actually making contact with the bass. There was one side shot where I swear he was "picking" and inch above the string. :confused:

Thought it was funny that the first two songs were from Wings and the last, Beatles. I'm guessing that way he has to pay Yoko once. I was confused on why "Day in the Life" and "Give Peace a Chance" would be a good medley but wife pointed out the Lennon tribute. One last thing: the iTunes commercials after each of his songs gave the real reason he was on.:hiding:

I only got to see a few minutes of it. I appreciate the fact that there are people whose standards are high enough to be bothered by the fact that Paul McCartney's vocals might not have been his best. However, he is 68 and it would be my guess somewhat affected by jet lag. Sometimes it can take a week or more to fully recover from jet lag. I'm willing to cut Paul McCartney some slack. This is especially true considering the fact that SNL has had some true disasters, such as the time Ashlee Simpson started singing the wrong song and ending up exiting the stage with a jig that made her look like a crazed leprechaun.

About the performance: Sadly, his vocals were not great. But each song was better than the last. That goes for his band too. I still like him, but have to face the fact that he is human and aging.

I agree that "A Day In The Life/Give Peace A Chance" was a tribute to Lennon. The spirit of the latter is okay, but IMO it's a lame song.

Sound: I watched it on regular TV - analog with digital converter box in mono. What I heard was a typical not-so-good SNL mix. I could hear the vocals fine, but not the bass. I also think the band "rocked out" as much as can be expected, considering the stage and room are probably pretty small.

McCartney is past his prime, but I can't find too many bad things to say about him. I say "boo" to the iTunes agenda and "???" to the three bass rigs.

True, neither he or the band were in great voice yesterday. Though I saw him in the summer at Citifield andthey were absolutely amazing. The CD from that show is also great.

Hey, it's cold in NY. I lost my voice already. Everybody's human and aren't always going to be 100%. I do think it strange that he chose to pick songs that were way up in the top of his register.

I've seen McCartney on several live shows in recent years. Some were very good - the White House performance, for example.

I've been thinking too that out of his huge catalog, he should be more particular about which songs he can pull off without a hitch. Mind you, I'm a huge fan. I just want everyone to hear his best stuff.

I love the Who too, bu-u-u-ut they're pushing the envelope. Daltry can still sing, but their biggest hits are the most difficult for an old guy to sing. Townsend needs to tuck in his shirt and get with the program.

I'm 53 and not growing old gracefully either. I just hope I can keep the good and throw out the rest.

blame the mix on SNL/NBC. That's the signal they were sending out after THEY mixed it. Typical over the 35 years I've watched SNL.

Hey....he's Macca. He's 68, if the vocals are a little off, so what?
He got 4 segments. why? he's macca. let's be honest you've got to give him a wide berth. He's been making music since what? he was like 12? that makes 56 years?

He's macca.

I'm 51. I'm glad I didn't die before I got old! If I had known I was going to live this long I would have taken better care of myself.
