MEDIUM SCALE WARWICK ROCKBASS 5'er, this just changed everything

Congrats on a VERY cool bass and I applaud the well done review.

I, however, call BS on the title. :DAs long as you have an income and can still draw a breath, you'll be buying basses. Or at least have a hankering for a different one.

Congrats again! Both of your recent acquisitions have me GASing, but I'm done buying basses.

Simply beautiful! I could definitely see myself owning one. The headstock looks a little crowded, but what can ya do? The only other medium scale 5-string set I know of is LaBella Deep Talkin' Tapewounds. A set of White Nylon Tapes would be in order if I purchased one of these..

I haven't been here much lately, so just caught this in the new issue of BassPlayer. This looks awesome. I had a Corvette back in the day when they first came out. I'm very interested in this shorty.

To the OP: Thanks for the review, pics and making this happen. I thought I was all set with basses, but here we go again!

Did anyone buy the extra black model from Jay Marino?

On another note, the bass continues to satisfy. I really dig the tone. I chose to switch out the tuners for some black ultralites. This definitely improved aesthetics however, didn't help much in moving the bass to my preferred playing angle (closer to my ear). As noted earlier, I wouldn't say that the bass has neck dive but does tend to settle at the typical playing angle. I've got some black knobs coming too which should round out the pkg. I'll post pics when complete.

Finally, I ordered the "medium scale" warwick black label strings from MF however, they sent me the long scale. They are sending me another set, however I'm not terribly confident that they actually have the medium scale strings in stock. I also noticed that the .135 B from the new string set seemed a bit wide for the slot, so I'm questioning if the stock models are actually coming out of the factory with a .135 B as advertised.

No case. That is a Musician's Friend model. Unfortunately my bass knocks around in it. I did some measurements and this may actually work:

So here is the good and bad news. I added some black hardware and think it looks pretty killer. The downside is that I've spoken with stateside Warwick reps as well as string experts here on the forum and there are no B strings for this stateside. In order to buy Warwick strings, I would have to order from the website which according to my calculations would be approximately $125. I'm exploring other options at this time. Apparently, one member on the forum has successfully wrapped a low rider around the peg. Another option may may include custom strings. I'm also curious if anyone has ever turned a Warwick into a string-through. Anyhow, its a nice bass but there are no B strings available for it at this time. :hmm:

That's horrible!

Have you tried a sleeve of some kind on the ball end of the B in between the tailpiece and the ball? I know it sounds odd, but I could swear I've seen basses like that before, maybe older Ibby SR premiums.

It's too bad there wasn't a little more room between the nut and the tuning post. You could use regular scale strings, no sweat.

Have you tried contacting the official Warwick Official? I'd be bending his ear for sure if I had your problem. And it's weird hearing people are having trouble finding one. BP magazine did a great write up on em. Oh, and you did also. ;)

great looking bass

it totally sucks that there's not any B strings, let alone any selection of good B strings for short ( or medium ) scale basses ( i've got a couple of Ibanez Mikro 5ers )

i ordered a custom set of strings,, a total waste of $50. bucks, it's just like throwing good money in the trash can :rollno:


i tried modifying a couple of strings, it didn't turn out well, they all failed

the problem is, there's virtually no decent selection of strings for short scale basses, but there's a buttload of good strings for long scale basses,,,,

hmmm,,, thinking out of the box here

so my issue isn't really with the string, it's how it attaches to the bass, there's bridge mount, & there's string thru the body mount,,, hmmm,, how about an around the body mount :bassist:

sounds simple to me, i can use ANY long scale string, in ANY gauge & run 'em ATB ( around the body ) on my 28.6" scale bass

here's a photo on my 4string Mikro, with a 120/95/75/55 set of XL's but will be doing a 145 B to my 5er ( just haven't had time yet )

this is a viable option, it works beautifully, tuning & intonation is very stable :D

can i even find 120/95/75/55 strings in a short scale set that will work ??? HELL no :ninja:

That's a pretty slick idea!

Have you tried individuals at Bass strings online? I doubt if they have one that short, those Mikros are tiny.

If anyone (or company) is out there drawing up plans for a 5-string medium scale, it's best to make it string thru and enough room between the nut and B tuner to accommodate regular (34") string sets.

Just sayin. ;)

I usually don't GAS too hard for Warwicks, but that one intrigued me. In black though.

Edit: Nice knobs onthe Mikro! Stock?
