One of my best friends growing up knew Townes from his days in Austin, Tx. I had the opportunity to party a little bit with Townes back in the 1970s'.
You are SO RIGHT when you say, "Nothing quite like him." Part of Townes' ashes are buried across the lake from me out here in the Dido Cemetary NW of Fort Worth, Texas. I still visit the gravesite once a year. RIP Townes.

Roger Water in Toronto for the Pro's & Cons tour - Clapton on guitar. Nuff said even though he doesn't remember playing.
Tom Petty in San Fran - the night Freddie Mercury died, but an amazing show.
Springsteen The River tour - he played over 4 hours
Rush Time Machine tour - all the hits... My 15 year old son and my 65 year old dad (first time he saw Rush) both loved it.
Them Crooked Vultures in Toronto - 10 feet away from John Paul Jones all night!!!!
Foo Fighters Wasting Light in Toronto - Rush joined them for YYZ.... In YZZ (Toronto)!!!
Stone Temple Pilots at a club in Toronto a few years ago - front row 3 feet from the stage. Great show.
CSNY with my dad from second row floors 5-6 years ago. Cool just to see these guys!

-Metallica and Anthrax in about 86 at the Hammersmith Palais in front of about 100 people.
-Ministry and Helmet on the Psalm 69 tour
-Fishbone and Tool on the Reality tour
-Bob Dylan in about 1990
-Primus on the Frizzle Fry tour in a tiny club with about 50 people
-Janes Addiction on the Ritual tour
-my first festival, 'Monsters Of Rock', which now masquerades as 'Download', in 1984. ACDC headlined and a DLR fronted VH were second on the bill IIRC.
-Kiss in 83 on the Lick It Up tour
-Kiss in 80 on the Dynasty tour
-Aimee Mann, sometime in the early 90's
-Clutch, pretty much any of the 15 or so times I've seen them, especially when Kylesa supported.
-Mastodon, playing Crack The Skye in its entirety.
-Baroness on the Blue Record tour
Many more too, but THE gig that still gives me tingles, is the first time I witnessed the live monster that is MESHUGGAH.

Funny, I've seen Hawkwind a whole bunch of times (including once with 2 different lineups of Gong supporting) but, for some mysterious reason, my memory is all blurry...

Jane's Addiction during the NINJA tour - a hot summer night and huge warm raindrops start falling as they start playing "Summertime Rolls", continuing through Mountain Song, then the rain stopped. Amazing vibe.
TKK finally seeing Charles Levi play live, followed by Lords Of Acid.
Slick Idiot, finally seeing Guenter Schulz play live.

My most memorable concerts, among all those I attended:
Rod Stewart/Heart, 1975 - my then girlfriend got hit in the head by an apple core thrown by some idiot sitting way up in the stands above us. Luckily she was OK. Rod was OK, but the Wilson sisters made me forget about my girlfriend. Maybe that's why we broke up shortly thereafter!
Pink Floyd, 1977 - me and 80,000 of my closest friends at Montreal's Olympic Stadium for the Animals tour. Sat on the floor, did some acid, and tripped mightily!
Genesis, 1980 - at Calgary's Max Bell Arena, a dinky arena that seats maybe 5000 people. For some reason they decided to use a stadium-sized PA. Thanks for the tinnitus, Genesis!
Elton John, 1984 - at the Worcester Centrum. Never ever let anyone tell you otherwise, Elton John puts on a kickass show!
Rush, 2007 - at the Tweeter Center in Mansfield, MA. My wife and my two boys along with myself. The only concert where I openly wept tears of joy when the first notes of Limelight were played by Alex. Best. Rock. Concert. Ever. Nuff said!
But seriously, my very best concert ever was when we went to our local high school for the Spring Concert back in 1995. My oldest son, who was 9 at the time, and daughter, who was 7, were on stage singing. Now, how could this not be the best concert ever?
